Idiot Poker Move

now mind you this hand is between the two chipleaders with 8 people left. IMO a real dumb move.
Steve opened for 58k from the hijack and then Jason popped it to 167k from the small blind. Back to Steve, who calmly announced he was all-in, having Jason covered. Jason tanked for a couple of minutes, then made the call. Steve held pocket Queens and had Jason's AQ crushed. The 5 4 2 flop gave Jason more outs with the wheel draw, but only an Ace or 3 would save him. Last two cards came J T and Steve pulled the monster pot.
Jason DeWitt finished in 8th place, earning $25,618.

Horseshoe in Chicago WSOP Circuit event

the hand alone is questionable and probably -EV but you have to look at the entire history of these two players. Who knows what happened before at this table.

why SFP? your fold/call/raise PF chart says its bad?

when your life is on the line, you wanna push with something stronger than AQ generally
it's unacceptable to do so if you're 1 of the 2 big stacks and 8 people are left

ok. again, think logically about the table, the situation, and the previous history. Ignore what you read in books, please. And i'm going to assume these are a couple of pros...

p.s. AQ didn't shove, he called the all in. Which means he either 1) had a strong read (which we can't tell) or 2) he's an idiot (which I doubt)

this is still a tourney. he put in almost 60k, which seems like a huge raise for AQ but i don't know the blinds/patterns to say that
this is a tourney. it's your "life." you don't risk it on AQ when you're 1st or 2nd in chips
even pros make mistakes
he prolly thought it was a coin flip or he had him dominated by Ax. too much stock in a read

It all depends on how strong of a read he had. Imo he wouldn't call if we flipping, obviously. But i'm pretty confident he strongly felt he had this guy dominated. All i ask is that you step away from the book thought on poker. You'll be a decent player but you'll never be good.

AQ has killed more professionals than any hand in poker history.
AQ has knocked the man Phil Hellmuth out like 6 times in the WSOP main event.

I would not call if i was flipping if i fold at that point I am still 2nd and chips and go with a coin flip at that point tells me that you are not to confident in your game.

other than the most very basic beginning steps, it's all me

it all depends on his read...which we don't know. Since it's live it could be anything. But seeing the ENTIRE hands of the final table might shed some more light onto why he called. He def. didn't call for a coin flip...I can assure you that.

i agree, but i hate gambling on coin flips preflop as a general rule (not that you can always avoid it)
i'd bet he had a lot of his bullshite, stealing-attempts raised and he was TIRED OF IT. and he thought he had trapped the other guy with AQ. ego and impatience hit the best of them
Posted on 11/2/08 at 6:03 pm to SlowFlowPro
come on, man. these guys aren't idiots. I highly, highly doubt it was a frustration call or a "i'm going to make a stand" type call. He called because he had a very strong read.

Not a bad move at all IMO. MrSmokey is a very aggro player. Im not sure how long they played at the same table but I will bet MrSmokey was abusing the table. JD probably figured he was playing stacks rather than cards against him and made the call.
