Pollock said it best yesterday, one of the clear things that came out of this years playoff selection is that the G5 now has concrete evidence it will never be invited to the CFP. He said that they either need to be creating the G5 playoffs or moving down to FCS. Having said that, lets imagine if the G5 had an 8 team playoff with 5 conference champions and 3 at large bids. How would that look? Here would be my scenario. Rank the conference winners 1-5 then the 3 at large bids.

Conference Champions:

1. UCF (12-0) AAC Champ
2. FAU (10-3) CUSA Champ
3. Boise St (10-3) MWC Champ
4. Troy (10-2) SunBelt Champ
5. Toledo (10-3) MAC Champ

At Large Bids:

6. Memphis (10-2)
7. USF (9-2)
8. San Diego St (10-2)

Playoff Format:

1 vs 8
4 vs 5

2 vs 7
3 vs 6

I personally think that would be highly entertaining. I would watch it. Finally, it gets these teams out of purgatory. These schools literally have nothing to play for and this could fix that.

Makes more since than

moving down to FCS.

The FCS already has as many teams as the FBS. Just need to make another division for themselves, or have their own playoff within the FBS, and still send other non-playoff qualifying teams to bowls.

UCF should schedule the likes of Florida, FSU, Miami and Georgia every year as Their OOC schedule if they want in. Play 4 big boys and win every game, then you have a case.

If course if they play those teams this season they have, at the very least, two L's on the season and they don't have people crying to give them a chance.

UCF got screwed by not having Georgia Tech game but had Houston gone undefeated they would have been in last year. All they can do is schedule as many power 5 games as possible and hope for the best.

I like the idea, but it would be boring this year as Toledo would take everyone else to the woodshed

That's fine and dandy, will those teams ever give them a return game @UCF??? P5 teams are scared to play on the road at places like UCF, Memphis and Boise St.

Yeah, and the minute a G5 school starts beating P5 schools of that caliber, they will quit scheduling them. The P5 schools aren't going to let a G5 school like 2017 UCF threaten their chances of making the playoff.

Sucks that UCF didn't know in advance that they were going to go 12-0 so they could schedule some real OOC games and try to make a run of it, but they didn't play anybody relevant all year.

I think your initial statement is hyperbole, but I also hate the idea of guaranteeing a G5 (is this what we're calling them now?) team a playoff spot under any circumstances... the P5 teams play in tougher environments and none of them have any guarantee that they'll make it either. Hell, had the Big Ten not had a conference championship game, there would be questions as to whether 12-0 Wisconsin made it this year. (They probably do, but there would have been some room for argument.)

That all said, a G5 playoff is pretty neat and I like your idea quite a lot. It would also serve as a means to focus attention on promising G5 schools for P5 expansion down the line.

Eventually I'm sure some would. You have to earn your spot at the big boy table.

And we've all seen how that worked out in the past with Boise St. When Boise St was at their highest level of play, P5 teams finally scheduled them and Boise St was winning against them, yet everybody still cried about them having a shot. The G5 teams need their own avenue to win a championship. They currently do not have the opportunity to win the P5 or FCS title.

The playoff games could take the place of some of these crappy bowls that nobody cares about,

Tech sucked this year and would not have helped them.

That said, UCF is the one that cancelled the game very early in the week rather than waiting to see what happened. Every other team in Florida that had home games that week actually played as scheduled.

It wouldn’t help them TBH... it’s not like the committee gives a frick about strength of schedule anyway
