Not anytime soon. HBO was already an add on. ESPN comes with any cable service.

You don't think they had a negotiation in the deal that said they could only offer the services to subscribed carriers?

It's not like this deal was made in 1984 or something.

I guarantee there is a clause in their contract saying they can't or the cable company gets a hefty portion of cash back.

Cable companies do not have the leverage here

No but they have the subscribers, I guarantee that is in the contract.

Also sports still carry a premium for ad revenue because its basically one of the few programs people will still watch live for the most part. So converting to an all digital format is still a little tricky, not only for ad revenue but also service. HBO's programming is gonna be pretty spread out an even. If ESPN had games that were only accessible from the internet and the feed crashed or lagged, people and advertisers would go bananas.

Na. They will just jack the cost of internet and start actually charging for cap overages.

They aren't going to lose a dime. I wish they would but at the end of the day, people who want the best internet experience are still going to get the shaft.

If ESPN goes streaming, wouldn't the cable companies would drop all those other stations that are owned by Disney. There are close to a dozen stations that they would drop.

you must have a cable/satellite subscription to subscribe to HBO

just because you use someone else's login information doesn't change HBO's business model unless you're telling me that HBO just made a huge announcement in which case

They are already planning on doing a netflix style service with the MLS and now announced something similar with the new NBA tv deal.

doesn't change much for me though. I watch a variety of programming and if it's ever all subscription based, you're still going to buy channels you don't want (Viacom).

I'm too reliant on live sports to ever cut the cord.

I get HD streams for free of all local channels with an HD Antenna I bought from Amazon for $10. So this means all ABC, NBC, and CBS local sports games are free.

Plus, with sites like bosscast, wiziwig, and firstrow I can stream all the other games for free and cast to my TV with chromecast. Sometimes it is not in HD though, but still, free.
