Are you sure? Revenue sharing is schools directly paying athletes to compete in their sport. LSU isnt paying NIL(wink wink) but are paying kids to play sports. In fact every school in the NCAA is. Court mandated payments in the billions.
And while not technically employees, they do sign contracts that require repayment if broken. Legal semantics are the only difference. Looks like an employee, paid like an employee, treated as an employee yet legally not an employee. Only the law could come up with that nonsense.

It is a professional league. They get paid to play. Paid a lot.

If all the NIL athletes joined a D league instead, they would toil in obscurity like the G league. Their "worth" is tied to the uniform. This has been completely forgotten

College athletes are professionals. The NCAA has recognized this and changed the eligibility rules away from definitions of amateurism.
The problem is they fumbled the transition - the 2022s.

So why are some schools trying to get a buyout from players who have left?
College and NFL are both pro leagues now.
