I always see these big stadiums and a lot of empty seats throughout. How does MLB generate money?

Manfred and the owners sell Mary Kay outside the stadium.

MLB is a dying professional sport for the general sports watcher. But they have a lot money backing them in huge markets.

Inflation and local taxpayers agree to pay most of the stadium tab.

Like others said, tv deals and advertising are where the primary cash is.

Baseball is a local, regional game. People love watching “their” team. Plus it’s popular in huge markets..NY, LA.

Is this the first month of the season? How about when we get to August?

Kids in school actually hampers spring attendance.

I’d assume ticket sales aren’t as bad as actual attendance. But I don’t know that for that a fact.

It's not. It's the same as last full season pre covid where 13 of the teams averaged 30K+ with 4 at 40K+.

MLB attendance has remained consistently high.

TV money

This. Just like the NFL, MLB doesn’t give a shite if people are in the stands. TV money more than makes up for it.

Hell if these leagues were honest they’d probably admit that they’d love to shite fans out of the stadiums for good

They sell ads on the hats and jerseys now to keep the lights on now. Definitely necessary and not a shameless cash grab

If that puts an end to the billion dollar stadiums that taxpayers pay for - then I'd be all for it.

For all their managerial ineptitude and incompetence, there is one area where MLB didn't just outperform all other sports leagues, but one where it absolutely set the model for every other sport in the world to mimic-- the internet and broadcasting rights from the internet.

You watch ESPN on Demand? Built on the back of MLB technology. When you open HBO Max? Its based largely on infrastructure models built by Major League Baseball.

Here's a handy spin off story about that transition-

MLB and Streaming

BAM and other technology aspects of the MLB web and internet operations generate amazing revenue streams, and that's long before you get into actual baseball generated revenue.
