quote:I think Theo and Madden knew they had a chance to compete and get a wildcard berth this year. They may not of believed the team would be THIS good but I think they thought they had a chance. They signed Lester to a big money deal and a team doesn't do that if they don't believe he can help make them competitive. The team won 73 games last year and I am sure they thought adding Lester, Fowler, Bryant, Hammels, and Montero would be a 10-15 game improvement. which puts them right in the wildcard as 88 games put a team in the wildcard last year.
The goal has been to develop a team that could compete get to the post season and see what happens. To that end they're ahead of schedule and I don't think there is a debate to be had about that.

Everyone knew they could compete this year, but again, not fourth best record good.

4 rookies sped up russell and schwarber. I don't think anyone expected them to be this good. Jed even said so recently. Now they aren't going to clap themselves on the back but I think what the cubs did at the trade deadline speaks loudly enough that this is a bonus year. In summary the coming years they're only going to be richer and better. I think that's pretty obvious. Enjoying this year though.

quote:every Cubs fan says this, I am sure we all thought the Cards would be good, who thought they would be THIS good. Same with Twins, Astros, Angels, and Mets.... all of these teams are doing it with a mix of rookies and young players. The point is EVERY YEAR we see teams that are expected to be middle of the pack but competitive who step up.
I don't think anyone expected them to be this good.
Cubs are not really doing it with offense as evidence by their team .241/.319/.382 slash line, their .701 OPS ranks 20th currently. Pitching has been their catalyst ranking 4th in team ERA and 2nd in BAA.
quote:no really, they don't have many needs outside of some bats. There was no real "it" bat on the market this year. Pitching every team wants but the Cubs have pitching. They didn't need to make a monster move, it would have been nice to add to the depth but a 3 of Arrieta, Hammel, and Lester is a better than average 3.
but I think what the cubs did at the trade deadline speaks loudly enough that this is a bonus year.

I'm not trying to be a dick but I don't see your point. That this year the cubs and cubs fans expected to be a playoff team. Because when this plan went in effect this was supposed to the first year of above 500 but we have all pointed to 2016 as the playoff year. So this year isn't a bonus? You don't expect the cubs with all their ne revenue to be better next year or the year after?

I thought you said we needed to go get sheilds?

quote:at the start of the year many predicted the Cubs as a wildcard club or challenging for a wildcard, now the narrative is "we were not supposed to be this good." Ummmmmm they were if they were predicted as a wildcard card team, people did predict them to be good. Now you can say 4th best record or whatever but they were still predicted to make the playoffs and if the Giants and Royals taught us anything that wildcard teams are just as good as the #1 seed.
I don't see your point.
quote:No because baseball is unpredictable... they could be better, they could be worse. Especially when counting on rookies, no one knows if Schwarber is currently playing over his head, or if Russell is as good as he will get, etc.... Part of the reason I love baseball that a team that everyone picks as next up and coming team can implode and a team no one believes in can reach the postseason. Nothing is predictable which is great. I enjoy watching the Cubs, they are one of the teams I watch when the Yankees are not on, along with the Pirates, Astros, Angels, and Twins. Mets are moving into the range as well because of that pitching staff.

quote:I did, I believed (and still do) Shields would be a bonus. He would give the Cubs 4 solid starters and he has pitched much better in July. He is a competitor and someone who I think would have helped the Cubs close the gap on the Cardinals and Pirates.

I don't think anyone has said that the cubs couldn't be a wc2 team. I believed they had an outside chance but as a cubs fan that was best case scenario. No they can finish a gane under 500 ftom here and still be a 90 win team. Furthermore this year was a bonus a sentiment echoed by other cubs fans. I find it disingenuous to say our expectations for our tea was wrong based on hindsight.

I don't see how they could be that low, they won 73 games last year. They added Lester, Fowler, and Montero. Plus everyone knew Bryant was coming up. Wild card 2 would have been my minimum for the team and after googling MLB season expectations most writers had them pegged as an 84-87 win team or a 10-15 win improved team. Of course some of these had Pirates and Padres as the wild card teams at 90 wins apiece.
A lot of teams are actually playing below expectations of the "experts." As the Nationals, Dodgers, Red Sox, Tigers, Indians, Mariners, Giants, Rangers, Cards, and Baltimore were all predicted to be 90+ win teams by most of these people.
I'm not saying Cubs fans should not enjoy where they are. Just that the narrative has changed from a lot of what it started at the beginning of the year. On this board more than a few predicted wild card, now it has become, "we weren't even supposed to be in the playoffs" or "we are still a year away from being competitive." No they are competitive now and next year is not guaranteed. That is just my stance/opinion

So I'm guessing Cubs fans are happy with Epstein?

I would assume...
If he can get rid of Castro and get value they would love him
