I wish Jan Vesely didn't withdraw his name. Supposedly he's looked VERY good today against Josh Childress in the Euroleague playoffs or whatever major event is going on out there.

Doubt the Hornets would draft a Euro anyway

At best he's Tyson Chandler with a jump shot

The most immediately effective part of Whiteside's offensive game will probably be setting on-ball screens. He isn't strong enough where defenders will be unable to fight through the screen, but he's long enough to create a wide obstacle and then the dribbler will have the option of hitting him rolling to the bucket for a Chris Paul to Tyson Chandler type of lob that we frequently saw in New Orleans, or they can also hit him for an open jumper. Whiteside will have the option of taking a 15-footer that he should eventually be able to hit at an efficient percentage, or he can put the ball on the deck to drive the lane.

But does he know that, or does he think he's Dwight Howard?

Despite clearly being relatively new to basketball, Whiteside has a remarkable offensive skill set. You only need to watch him play for a few trips down the floor, see the No. 21 and realize that he idolizes Kevin Garnett and attempts to pattern his game after him.

Eh, this was actually a pretty big problem for Henry and Kansas. Henry was regarded as the X-Factor on Kansas. When he showed up, Kansas won. If he didn't show up, Kansas didn't have the easiest of games. Problem is, Henry really didn't show up consistently and just didn't assert himself on offense. There's a difference between deferring the ball and not asserting yourself, and I think Henry lands on the latter side.

Kansas won when they gave Cole aldrich the ball in the post. Henry is not ready for the NBA and your about him starting from day one is hilarious.

Considering the alternatives at the 3 for the Hornets I think he could start from day 1 just as a floor spacer, but Henry isn't even on my short list at 11 and I'd pick Paul George way before Henry if we go SF.

but your not the Hornets. I still remember when they picked JuJu and I was so mad. The guy shot like 15 percent from the college 3. Barely 40% overall from the field and 65% from the line. Plus he had that break away dunk where he just lost the ball, Like the ball just fell out of his hands. What a fricken spaz

I read all of that and told wiseguy earlier in the thread that i'd changed my mind about him. But like i also said, from reading up on him, the guy seems dumb as a door knob. He's about to be a 21 yr old college fresman, could barely qualify, and could barely stay qualified once he got there. He basically had no choice but to come out

Do u have a link to that or where did you hear about his shortcomings intellectually? I was holding off judgement on the whole being 20 years old as a freshman until I heard or saw the reasons why....The DJ Lemahui ( spelling) situation is similar as far bas age

Its briefly mentioned about halfway down. Im looking for another article i read, i'll post it when i find it

eta: its actually also in the same article

quote:

Whiteside’s fundamentals, basketball IQ and overall awareness are well below average, even considering his freshman status. He at times looks out of place in Marshall’s half-court offense, looking as if he’s not quite sure where he should be at any particular moment, which at this late stage in the season makes you wonder about his ability to process an NBA team’s far more complex playbook.

Whiteside had a very difficult time qualifying academically for college, only actually getting into school at age 20, and is reportedly having problems staying eligible now that he’s already there, which will likely leave him no choice but to enter this year’s draft.

“Immature” is the word you hear most often associated with Whiteside both on and off the court, as there will certainly be a large degree of hand-holding and coddling that whichever team drafts him needs to do in order to help him reach his full potential. There are major questions about his work ethic and intensity level, which is a bit concerning considering how far off he currently is from being able to contribute to an NBA team. We also need to keep in mind that despite his freshman status, he’s the same age as many college juniors, turning 21 this upcoming June. This obviously limits his upside to a certain degree.

Eh....it's 11 or by some miracle, top 3 or 12th. It's about a 95 percent certainty it's 11th

Yeh I saw it when u first posted it. Hopefully it's one of those situations that he feels he doesn't need to learn biology cause he's going to the NBA

Is the NBA playbook really that hard for a center? On defense stay between your man and the basket and keep an eye out for penetrators to swat. If you hear the sound of rustling wind, someone has blown by David West so turn around and block their shot. On offense stand still where CP3 tells you to then roll to the basket for the alley oop.

Which lately has been about 60% of the trips to the defensive end. He should pick it up in the first 10 games.

In other words, yeah, Chandler but with a jump shot.

I like the guy's potential from what I read (I never saw him play). He's a gamble with a pretty big upside.

If, say, Monroe was available, he's a big man who is more likely to contribute sooner.

Which brings up a question. Let's say fortune and the ping pong balls unexpectedly smile upon the Hornets and they end up with a top three pick. Does that change everything? Evan Turner, for example?

Nah. It's basically learning the rotations on defense, how you defend the pick and roll etc...

He just has to have the WANT to learn, and with KG as his idol. I hope he for his sake he has that want to

If Monroe falls to 11 you pick him

Turner, Favors, Johnson, Cousins all would be HUGE additions at positions of need too. If they somehow ended up with one of these four...

You could say the same for college. He probably had even fewer responsibilites at Marshall and he struggled there.

Its more than the playbook though. You can get away with not knowing an NBA playbook if you just have good natural basketball instincts. I dont think any of us have seen him play enough to know this about him
