Helped integrate the Southwest Conference as SMU head coach by fielding the conference’s first black scholarship football player, Jerry LeVias, in 1966.

Iowa was dead as a doornail before he was hired.

He broke the big 2 little 8 paradigm.
1981 was the first non big 2 team to play in the Rose since 1968.
His 1983 and 1984 teams spent time in the top 10 and his 1985 Rose Bowl squad spent 6 weeks ranked #1 in the nation. Rose bowls after the 1981 and 1985 seasons and also another appearance after 1990 season.

Illinois made a Rose in 83 going undefeated but they had major recruiting violations.

Michigan State had a great year in 87 with Lorenzo White running the ball and beat USC in the Rose in a rematch.

Now it's the big 1 and little 13.

He was my childhood as an Iowa fan. The man was a such an icon in Iowa. He took over a program that had not had a winning season in 18 years and within three years had them in the Rose Bowl.

His mark is still on the program and will be forever.

He was largely responsible for the Iowa Tigerhawk logo.

Started the “swarm” entrance for the team to show togetherness.

The visiting pink locker rooms were his idea.

Wanted to mirror the Iowa uniforms after the Steelers because he wanted Iowa to look like a winner.

And he was such a quote machine and had an iconic look on the sideline with the white pants, aviators, mustache and usually some kind of old school Iowa hat.

He invented Iowa football as we know it today. Sure they probably won’t ever win a national title, but they are probably maximizing their potential at the same time considering their location and having another P5 program in the state. He was really close to winning a national title in 85. Bad rain storm at OSU and Ronnie Harmon throwing the Rose Bowl probably ended all of that.

His coaching tree is unreal. Bill Snyder, Bob Stoops, Ferentz, Alvarez and others.

He broke the color barrier in the SWAC.

Was also a proud Marine veteran.

RIP Hayden Fry. Iowa is mourning today.

Dude, Iowa was pure dogshite when he took over and had them in the Rose Bowl by his third year. Iowa was in a string of 17 straight non winning seasons and a Rose Bowl drought of 23 years. He goes to three Rose Bowls in a 10 year period, and gets Iowa to number 1 during the 85 season. So, yeah dumbass he did break the Big 2 Little 8 party up.

Mark Stoops played under Fry as a DB.

I see a lot of similarities how Stoops is building Kentucky like Fry did in Iowa. Ball control offense with physical players on the front line....and a strong defense.

Also, Fry had ANF stickers on the helmets for the Hawkeyes....”America Needs Farmers”

The Stoops' dad was buried in an Iowa Hawkeye jersey because of how proud he was of his sons playing for the Hawkeyes.

Also, Fry initially had a more wide open attack. He was famous for saying scratch where it itches, which means run when they expect you to pass and pass when they expect you to run. Chuck Long had all the Big 10 records in passing for a very long time.

1985 Iowa/Michigan was one of the first heavyweight fight type games I remember.
quote:

What, like it could really be any other game? It's the only 1 versus 2 game Iowa's ever been involved in, it's one of Iowa's biggest wins over Michigan, and it's arguably the most exciting finish in the history of the Iowa-Michigan series. Suffice to say, it was a pretty damn big deal. Unlike many of the seasons profiled in this series, 1985 didn't come out of nowhere -- quite the opposite, actually. It was one of the most highly anticipated seasons in Iowa history; Iowa started the season in the top five and Chuck Long was a Heisman contender from the moment he decided to return for his senior season. The season began with Iowa living up to their lofty ranking and recording lopsided blowouts over Drake, Northern Illinois, and Iowa State. After a thrilling win over Michigan State and a more comfortable win over Wisconsin, Iowa headed into the epic clash with Michigan, 6-0 and #1 in the nation.

The game itself lived up to the hype, with both teams trading punches and exchanging the lead several times throughout the game. Iowa was controversially denied a touchdown early in the game when Scott Helverson was ruled to have stepped out of bounds on a touchdown catch; they had to settle for the first of four Rob Houghtlin field goals. On the ensuing kickoff, Michigan's Tom Wilcher returned the ball sixty yards to set up Michigan's lone touchdown of the game. That touchdown wasn't without controversy, either:

Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh several times asked for and received permission from Referee Jerry Hendrickson to walk away from his center and halt the 25-second count because of “excessive crowd noise.”

That was a great game. Here is what happened before the game.

One year during pregame warm ups, Iowa was No. 1 and Michigan was No. 2. As a joke. Fry had his guards snap the ball to the punters during pregame and the balls were bouncing everywhere. Fry stood with his arms crossed, trying to keep a straight face. Bo came over, finally said, "Fry, you're not gonna let that guy snap during the game are you?" Fry turned and deadpanned, "Coach Schembechler, we don't plan on punting tonight." Then he walked off. Bo chased him down and, when he caught up with him, offered Fry a piece of gum as a peace offering. Fry grabbed the entire pack and for 10 years, that gum sat on his desk. Just a reminder of Michigan.
