Sampson was considered godlike. He was the next Kareem.
I sure thought so. I first heard of him when he was a Soph at UVA in 80-81. A pivotal year in the sports development of young H-Town Tiger) That was the year I became an LSU fan, following the basketball team's awesome season and run to the Final Four. Along the way I discovered Sampson who I like many thought would be the next Kareem. My family moved to Houston the year the Rockets traded Moses Malone to Philly. The next year they drafted Sampson who I was sure would lead them to a title, I've been a Rockets fan ever since.

I too was a Sixers/Dr J fan after the Jazz moved and rooted hard for the Lakers when they played Boston in a the enemy of my enemy was my friend kind of way.

I lived in Maryland. We drove down to UVA to touch his dorm room door (ok, we watched a game, too). Yes, we made a pilgrimage to his house.
Sampson is the greatest college basketball player of my lifetime. And the only other person in the photo is Patrick Ewing. People have simply forgotten not only how good he was, but the reverent tones we used to talk about him. He was godlike. I mean that.

So what's really happening is you are still butt hurt that the Lakers losing in 5 to that rockets team is one of the great NBA choke jobs of the last 30 years. Got it.

3 time college player of the year. He was the next big thing. I can't tell you how stoked I was that I was going to get to see him play in the NBA.

We haven't had a team with a dominant center win it since Olajuwon
Just Shaq 4xs & Duncan 3xs. David Robinson another

. And Kareem was awesome.
Not to hi-jack the Ralph Sampson love fest, but I've always thought Kareem is the most under appreciated superstar of all time. I guess it's in part because he is such a miserable a-hole in real life. But IMO, if Jordan and Chamberlin are 1 and 2 in NBA history, Kareem has a case for #3. He was freaking awesome and did win a title without Magic. Plus he was Roger Murdock, how can you top that.

Does Duncan count as a C? Shaq is the last of the Mohicans imo.

He's a dominant big man. League MVP, 3xs NBA finals MVP.
Center or PF, really splitting hairs

Wow. I really need more coffee this morning. That was a stupid comment. Though teams are now built from the 2/3 position instead of the 4/5 as the were in the 70s and 80s.
And no one holds being a tremendous a-hole against Jordan. In fact, he's praised for it. Kareem was a dominant player for 2 decades. While I've criticized One True Numbers in the past, and I stand by that, Kareem ranks #1 all-time in Win Shares. In fact, no one is that close to him (Wilt's 25 behind, which is a pretty big gap). I can't believe how much Kareem's rep has suffered in the past 20 years.

And Kobe never got another until he landed Gasol, who also had Bynum.
Celts had Garnett, but that was more of a super team

Shaq was a dominant center who won rings.
Robinson was still pretty dominant in '99, and while Duncan was and is listed as PF, he is still playing center a good amount of time, and the dominant post-presence for the Spurs.
Jordan didn't change the way you built teams, he was just so damn good he didn't need a huge scorer in the middle.

Reid: They were leaving the club and this guy came up and told them, "Hey, man, I've got something outside. This is the good shite. It's the best. Just take a little bump." And they told me, they took a little bump. The next day, [former NBA security chief] Horace Balmer and them are at practice. They were there at 9 a.m. when we started practice. You cannot leave New York City in the morning to be in Houston that early in the morning. So you would have had to be there the night before. I knew then. I knew then that they got set up.
Lloyd: We were definitely set up. Probably somebody on our team set us up. I don't know. It was unbelievable.

Reid: They broke us up intentionally because they wanted Bird and Magic. They knew L.A. would never get past us.
