Yeah when people find out I'm a Boston fan instantly get the bandwagon label. However, I probably know more about the team then some people living in Boston.

I'm shallow in that I don't see following a sports team to the point that I would call them "my" team, as a purely individual endeavor?

i still think that if you move somewhere that is not a previous rival, you should automatically adopt the new city's teams as AT LEAST your second favorites.

I've lived in NOLA, Baton Rouge, Dallas, and Atlanta.

I kind of like the Hawks a little bit, and I like to see the Rangers do well. The Braves are fun to follow. frick the Falcons. frick the Cowboys. I can't say anything nice about the Stars due to marrying into a Sabres family. The Thrashers hate their fanbase. Mavs? Meh. The league is fricked so it doesn't matter.

I used to go to Dallas Burn games.

Well if you claim to be a fan of the team then shouldn't you like the team if they move? Or is it then that there is no longer a team here that you can whore yourself out to another team?

Teams, especially in a league such as the NBA, can completely turn over personnel wise in the span of about 5 years. What's your connection to the city of Boston when they do so?

Geography's (former or current) really the only legit connection.

They don't have a single player on the team that was on it when I started following them. That doesn't mean that I haven't grown to like the new players, coaches, etc.

Also, unless you live in the city then it shouldn't matter. By saying "100 miles", or "In the state if they only have 1 team in that state" is a terrible way to make it up. Why 100 and not 1,000?

Easy driving distance.

Ok so North La should then be Dallas fans as it's probably easier for them to go there then NOLA.

Probably not. But, at least they have more of a legit connection to Dallas than you appear to have to Boston.

Shreveport to NOLA is twice as long as it is to Dallas. An going to Boston with my dad for my first NBA game is not a legit connection?

Family is also legit, in my opinion. For example, your whole family could be from Dallas and love the Cowboys, but your parents moved to Atlanta a little before you were born. I do not see what the problem of being a Dallas fan in that scenario would be. Also, keep in mind that your first and most malleable exposure to sports will come from your parents, if they are sports fans, and they may, in this case, attempt to make you love the Cowboys like they do.

That's still a geographic connection. It may be a bit tenuous, if you never actually lived there yourself, but it's probably a more legit connection than just saying "well, they're the team I thought it would be cool to pull for when I was a kid, so forever after they are MY team dammit!"

I take it you have never spent a significant amount of time in Boston....that is a hardcore sports town. I am sure you do know more than SOME people though.

Seems you twist the rules. 100 miles, but if they don't live in either city then...well maybe they can be different, but really they shouldn't, but it's possible.

Whereas someone who actually picks a team, before there were any other possible options, must then change their alliance due to the fact a team has moved closer to them.

Do you agree with the above comment about how your choice of teams can be based on your parents and what they teach you growing up? If you live in a house that supports the Cowboys(for whatever reason) and live in NOLA why would you growing up ever choose to like the Saints over the 'Boys?

My nephew is 5 and lives in New Orleans with my sister and her husband. He hates LSU..at five. Why? Because his father got rejected from the school and had to go to UNO. Do you think this is going to make an impact on where he goes to school? I'm almost 99% certain he's not going to LSU and this is 13yrs before he even has the choice.

Yep. As I said, I married into a Sabres (and Bills) family. Now I kind of like the Bills a bit.

I, for one, have no problem with people hating LSU, no matter the reason.

Yep. If you picked your team, just because you thought it would be a cool team to cheer for.

Hmmmmm.... I wonder if I would be labeled "bandwagon" since I do not live in the City/State of my favorite teams... nor do I have any real family connection to the teams...

Of course "bandwagon" term people twist and spin so that it can fit such a broad description of people. When a real bandwagon fan is one who switches between teams when they are winning. At least that is my description.

I agree with your description Tduecen. However, the OP would label you a bandwagon fan.

Why? He is from NOLA and by your standards should only like NOLA schools. Tulane, Delgado, UNO, Xavier, Holy Cross, etc should be his choices. Unless of course your logic only goes toward pro teams.

What makes the way you pick your team correct and the way I pick mine wrong? You pick your team because they are in your city/state. I pick mine because I like the team. As long as we don't flop from team to team, picking the team that is winning that year, should it even matter?
