This leads me to the question, Who the hell is running Grantland now?

That corporate shill Chris Connelly (who maintains this topical aura of "being real" because so many grew up with him on MTV news)

Bill Simmons has been the most influential sports media-person in the last 20 years.... maybe ever. He has essentially done everything from broadcast (admittedly a rarity for him) to producing to writing.

His most recent podcasts have been pretty open that Deflategate was probably a make-up for not going hard enough on New England during Spygate. That plus Goodell's just general incompetence is the most likely explanation.

I'd go with widest range, but it's hard to put him over Bob Costas.

Has Costas really pioneered anything? Other than talking incessantly over A-Rod's 3000th career hit?

Influential and pioneering are two completely different concepts.

You could argue MadDog and Dan Patrick are both in comparison to Simmons because they managed to take their act and remove themselves from any "network".

Yeah, I like the guy, but he is basically a top end anchor type who gets to editorialize once in a while.

Simmons is the most influential sports dude in the last ten years, I'd say. Before that, he was just a Page 2 guy.

I know everyone hates him, but runner up would probably be Olbermann.

I only listened to the first Simmons podcast so far, so didn't hear the really critical stuff. But, I actually thought like most people who have left ESPN, he wouldn't blast away too bad. People say that about Patrick, but I've never heard him really go off. Gottlieb has kept things in check. Never heard that bad of stuff from Eisen. Really, only Olbermann was harsh, and that was specific to a few guys. It would be hard not to be bitter if you're Simmons. You've done absolutely incredible work for ESPN and should have been paid as much as anyone other than maybe Tirico/Fowler/SVP, but get treated on the level of Rick Reilly.

Yeah I actually like Costas but I feel like he's not even the preeminent broadcaster of our time - I'd go with Al Michaels.

I feel like Simmons is more "outside the box" yet more corporately influential than anybody else - he maintains his outsider status even while he brought basically the only content of any real value to a multi-billion dollar corporation over the past 5 years.

Yeah I didn't like the movie talk but the ESPN gossip at the beginning was great.

I'd advise people to skip the movie talk unless you for some reason love Anne Hathaway

I haven't read the entire thread and I'm sure this has been brought up.

But,

1) Did anyone really think ESPN was not in the bag for the NFL?

2) Simmons has a beef with ESPN and has never been a fan of Roger so anything he says about either should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Yea the beginning of the Wesley Morris one was super interesting. Looking forward to hearing more about what happened with nba countdown.

It doesn't sound like Bill is going to talk about that part much - I think he views it with some embarrassment. I was one of the few who actually loved him on Countdown - I thought his irreverence was funny. He was like a cocky 14 year old at the grown up table.

Cousin Sal had an epic rant about the new kicking about 10 minutes into this new pod

"Kickers shouldn't be this important! It's already stressful enough!"

Cousin Sal agreeing with me about the "batted ball" controversy - not a big deal it was clearly a great play and a fumble and would have been a shame had Detroit won on some bullshite technicality.

We will get something. He at the least probably wants to blame someone. I liked him too because it was something different. Espn nba coverage is the worst.

Its ok for seattle to win on a blown call? If there were a facemask or a PI on the play would that have been a technicality? Its a penalty and should have been called.

Can we just start a BS Podcast thread that hopefully won't get anchored like the one I made for the first episode?
