I haven't closely followed CFB now for several years and likely never will again. That said, I have been a fan of 16 this century.
There were 10 conferences (no idea how many currently). Each champ gets auto birth. Remaining 6 spots go to highest rated teams outside of Champs.
That makes regular season matter for EVERY conference. It would actually make CFB fans keep an eye on many more teams. It also leaves 6 spots for other top teams to make it in, so u don't lose hope after losing just one conference game (which may have been a road game with poor refereeing)
Seed all 16 after they are determined. So #1 plays the worst team, even if they won their conference.

quote:how, there aren’t as many
They now realize they can fill playoff stadiums with Arizona State fans just as easily as Bama fans.

It'd be dumb if they expanded it. 12 is already too much. 4 was good with 6 being the max.
6 is good. The top two get rewarded with a bye and there are enough spots so an undefeated gets in.
Assuming you implement rules to limit the impact of voter bias or ignorance.

Chalamette,
There aren’t as many because the powers who run the sport have turned it into a regional sport by roadblocks for everyone except the big boys of the past. You have to step away from your bubble and look at the entire landscape. How do you expect college football to grow in the west or northeast when every rule or enforcement is at the benefit of the south? If Arizona State had a true viable path to a playoff system they would recruit better, have more money donated, and a bigger fanbase. Look at Indiana or Vandy as recent examples. There stadiums were empty 3 years ago now packed houses. My team, GT, has had for the first time in a decade several sellouts this season because fans were excited. But instead, the SEC types will bash any school like ASU who may be 9-3 and say they don’t deserve a chance but a 9-3 Ole Miss does. The southeast is a saturated market. The sport needs to grow to other regions to stay viable. Having a UGA, Bama, Ohio St, ND Final Four every year will lead to college football decaying.
The polls should no longer be used because they are just opinion and not fact. These same polls we are suppose to be accurate also had FSU, Clemson, Texas, and LSU in the top 10 to start and we all saw how inaccurate they were. Give each conference 3-4 auto bids so every fan in America has hope into November and December.

Miles ahead,
We will have 24 teams soon. The problem you have and many others everyone still believes we should use polls as measuring stick. No other sport does that because it’s stupid. Polls are nothing but gossip. They aren’t accurate and have never been accurate.
We’ve all seen teams start out in top 5 preseason who lose 3 and still ranked while teams who start out not ranked start 5-0 and aren’t ranked. It’s because by using polls you encourage people in the conferences to push their teams. You don’t see that in any other sport because it’s arbitrary. People on this SEC board love to say their 6th place team is better than the 2nd place ACC team. I’m fine with smack talk as all sports has that, but now the gossip is actually influencing the polls and ACTUAL playoff selections. What many here claim is preferential treatment for Notre Dame is what the SEC gets every year. How do you explain away a bottom level ACC beating Bama on National TV? You can’t, but they say a 7-5 SEC team would whip a 9-3 ACC just because. It’s madness and no sport operates like that. Once we have 24 teams with 4 auto bids for each conference then this sport will really take off on a national level. Until then it’s just a regional sport with most of the country not paying attention.
