Like with the Men's game - you wish certain players overlapped.
80's was all Chris and Martina because everyone else blew. Sabatini was hot (for tennis) but just ok...and then you had Pam Shriver and a bunch of weak little girls and awkward cry-baby Eastern Euros.
You have to remember, women were just turning the corner into becoming athletes...Title IX was fresh ink...tennis in the 60's/70's was dainty and pretty and Tracy Austiny. Martina started destroying her competition because she actually trained like an athlete.
It would have been nice to see Serena and Graf and Seles and Hingis overlap in their primes.
Serena would most likely be just too damn powerful for Martina to handle on volley considering she had trouble with Evert.
Graf was the about the only one who could hang with Serena and her power.

Negative. I think Graf and Martina would beat Serena. After thinking things over, I do think Serena would beat Evert.
Serena would destroy Martina. And would beat Evert 1 and 1 every single day of the week.

Monica deserves to be mentioned even if her career basically ended at 19. She was incredible
Smart poster. She was objectively better than Steffi...and then she got stabbed.

That's not a yuppie thing, that's just the scoreboard man.
Hard-hitting analysis.

In women's tennis, Martina is #1. No question about it.
Or not.

How many of Grafs titles came after the Seles stabbing?????????
Loads

Seles majors:
1990:
FO
1991:
Aussie
FO
USO
1992:
See 1991
1993:
Aussie
Then stabbed
Steffi wins next four.
Steffi wins seven more after that.
That's 11 majors. In the absence of the stabbing, I'm replacing that 11 with a 3.
Steffi gets credit for 14 majors, as I see it.

Seles had a great return of serve. I would be interested to see if it would hold up against Serena's serve.
Steffi would have given Serena the most problems because of the way she covered the court, and because her slicing groundies would fare better against Serena's serve than Seles' full on attack-mode swings.
Serena would have made Martina look silly. Anyone who writes otherwise has no clue what they're talking about. And Chrissie wouldn't have given her a match. The first moonball Chrissie throws up is getting taken out of the air for a clean winner. Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

Regrettably I never got to see her live in action, being that I wasnt strutting around this terrible earth until mid 1991, but I've seen highlights and can obviously read statistics. Bitch was bad. Tennis got robbed. I've read some other people's opinions on the matter and some seem to believe she would've only won 3 or 4 more, but I just don't see how that is possible, especially since she managed to win one even after the stabbing. Oh well, no fun to play the "what could've been" game

What's the argument that she was only going to win 3 or 4 more? She was improving and was completely dominating Steffi. I'm not sure if she had even turned 20 years old at that point.
To this day I've never seen anybody play tennis like Seles. The angles she hit off both sides were really remarkable. Really sharp, aggressive angles with seemingly every shot. When she played Graf, it was as if she had her on a string.

But Steffi had a better body. Andre ain't no idiot.

1) the link within the link: LINK
serena's right arm here almost looks like that photoshopped tebow on the driving range.
2) best ever needs to be defined. while i may not have the greatest memory, but other than the serena slam year, i am not sure how many other years she was dominating result-wise. sure, you can have great individual match records with all of the good ones but I would like to see (and I am not going to pull it up) is a year to year review of her indicating: (1) year end ranking and (2) majors won that year. post that and see if one would consider that resume as a "best ever" i doubt it. On the other hand, if one would say who would you select for 1 match or a best of 3 (5, 7 series), then yes, i probably would say serena, but that is not how you define best ever in tennis

Serena has been the undisputed best female player in the game since 2002.
The #1 ranking does't mean shite when it belongs to players like Caroline Wozniacki for more than a trivial amount of time. So you're gonna need to work on that criteria.
