It's like people from Philly saying Eggles, instead of E-gulls. Or however they do it.

Cambridge Dictionary has different pronunciations for the UK and the US. I've never heard anyone pronounce it the way they think we do in the USA.
They must have heard someone talking about the Bengals cheerleaders.
ETA: I miss Mike being just outside the tunnel where the visiting team comes out onto the field at Tiger Stadium. In the 90's I sometimes sat in a box where dignitaries likethe visiting teams presidents sat, It was over that tunnel. Sometimes guys would pick at him, and he'd lunge at them and growl. It scared them badly. Like sh*tting themselves bad.
