they don't carry another guy that is only a placekicker.
but typically there is someone else on the roster capable of performing the duties in an emergency. and that person is obviously not nearly as good as the actual kicker.

There’s a kid my son’s age that’s 6’5” 240 or so that kicks. Plays OL through the season then competes as a specialist, kick and punts, in the off season.

He doesn’t make the finals and he’s not top ranked…but he can kickoff, kick, and punt pretty damn well. He is going to be one valuable fella.
