Like I said...Its ALL about winning the whole thing... frick Bron... He is 2-3 and could be 2-4 in the Finals.... Yes it took MJ a while to get to the finals, BUT when he got there he was a perfect 6-0... Get back to me when Bron can say this..........

So should LeBron have purposely lost in the conference Finals when he was in Cleveland the first time to avoid the unbeatable Spurs?
Posted on 5/28/15 at 4:20 pm to SwaggerCopter
Yes. How else would he have an undefeated finals record like MJ?
Even though MJ never made it to to the finals with such a shitty team around him.

Get back at me when Lebron quits the game in his prime only to go hit .202 in Double A for a season.

Ok, but at what point does it break even? After this season, they will both have the same number of conference titles. It will take at least three more seasons if the Cavs win before LBJ has the same number of NBA titles as MJ.
Obviously being 3-3 in the finals is not the same, relatively speaking, as 6-0, right?
What about 4-3? 5-3?
Personally I think it is a moot point until James wins his 5th title at least, maybe even his 6th. Otherwise all he is doing is proving he can dominate his conference, and not the whole league. It's like being a badass AAA baseball player that can't hack it in the majors. Or it's like the Braves winning 387 straight division titles but only winning the WS once. It matters to be able to finish. And so far, Lebron has finished fewer times than he has failed when it mattered most.

You cherry picked his best year that was probably a bit of an outlier that would have come back down closer to his other years over a bigger sample size.
It's usually smart to know what you're talking about first. I didn't cherry pick anything. lsupride posted Jordan's 93 and 95 playoff stats. Those were his "back to back" playoffs so to speak. His scoring was down and his TO's were up.
The rest of your post would matter if it had any relevance to what pride and I were talking about.

quote:MAYBE? Maybe if he gets 6? How the hell do you figure that? If Lebron gets 6(doubt he will) it's game over as far as who was more successful. Lebron will absolutely have that title. Doesn't mean he's better than MJ....but he will have had more success.

That first Finals team in Cleveland was just absolute garbage. They had no business being there.
Amazing, you answered your own question

People aren't saying it's better to lose before getting to the Finals. What people are trying to get through to some of you is that when you have an easy path to the Finals, you don't get the same credit if you can't win the whole thing. You said it yourself, that CLE team was garbage. This year's CLE team isn't much better with all the injuries yet here LBJ is again because the East is so shitty. And it has been for many years.
When MJ was hitting his prime, he had to fight off a winner in Detroit in the East. Not to mention the Cavs, Knicks, and Celtics who were all 50+ game winners. So yes, MJ lost before getting to the Finals to a team like the Pistons who won it all back to back. The East was actually good.
Not sure how this doesn't make sense to some of you. It's not like anyone wouldn't want their team in the Finals as much as possible. Going 6-3 is awesome and better than going 6-0 since you got 3 more Finals. But LBJ would have to win 4 more just to get to that 6. It's not happening. I could be wrong but I don't see it. He's had his chances, he blew it in 2011...bad (something you wouldn't see from MJ) and after forming a super team they almost walked away with 1. He did get 2 though.
So to summarize, going to 6 Finals in a weak conference good, losing 4 is bad because you played a real team. Yes, I'm picking GS

If you read carefully I am saying that this conversation is premature until Lebron wins a fifth title, maybe even a 6th.
You'd agree that you can't crown him the GOAT with a 3-3 Finals record, right? What about 4-3?

I don't think it has much to do with championships.

How significantly different is that from LeBron losing to a Celtics team that won it all, a Magic team that went to the Finals, and the Celtics again, who went back to the Finals?

You'd crown Lebron James as the greatest basketball player of all time if he scratches his way to a 3-3 record in the NBA finals? Really?

In a sport such as basketball, it has a LOT to do with championships.
He is one of the greatest of all time. But he needs to do more than win conference titles to be THE greatest of all time.

Why crown jordan and not bill russell?

Well, no. That's because the award didn't come into existence until his final season.

Did I say anything about Jordan being the GOAT? I was simply referring to the comparison that's being made.

Well who else were you referring to if not mj?
