Watching Earl Campbell highlights on NFL network and always loved those helmets. And the name. Was there a legal issue involved with rights to the name or was it a matter of new ownership just wanting to create their own identity?

Tagliabue retired the name and logo.

If I ever became commissioner, I would bring back the unique Super Bowl logos. Then I'd give the Oilers back to Houston.

The Oilers history still belogns to the Titans franchise.

When a team moves they almost always take the old records and history with them.

The Ravens/Browns was a unique exception.

So it seems like it was Bud Adams and heirs giving middle finger to Houston. I remember reading that the Titans took Vince Young just because Adams didn’t want the favorite son to go to Houston. I appreciate the bitterness.
Texans helmet is as good as it can be but the name lacks imagination. The Kansas City Missourians?

I tell people all the time that if the Texans would become the Oilers, I’d be a big fan. Texans is aggressively bland.

The Titans were selling these t-shirts on their team website when Bud Adams was alive.

So yes, the Titans still have rights to that name.

Yep Oilers need to be back in Houston. Buy our history back and rebrand the Texans.

Yeah, 'state nickname' can only work in a few states. The ABA "Miami Floridians" (later just "The Floridians") were one:

WFL's "The Hawaiians" were another:

"Texans" was also used by Dallas in the old AFL, San Antonio in the CFL, and Houston in the WFL:

I actually think the Texans uniforms and logo look good. But compared to the Oilers logo and uniform, it’s just so generic. Had I never known the Oilers I’d probably be alright with Texans.

bullshite. Few descriptions have more panache than Texans. It speaks for itself and conjures up all kinds of imagery.

Think "Dallas" was a boring TV show name? Far from it. Same thing.

It's odd you mentioned Kansas City, though. The Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans.
