My grandfather did the same. That's old school. He was in his late 60's when he went down with one and it fell on him and broke 7 ribs. My grandmother was mad. He went out and did the same the next day without going down obviously. He had done this all of his life and we had a yearling colt that was huge and he thought he was going to be special. Came home from the training center and saw that he appeared to be keeping his right front off of the ground. The horse has slipped in the wet field and broke it's shoulder. He had him put down and sold all of his horses and his farm and quit right then. He still tears up talking about that horse.
