Wasn't there a controversy that in the 2004 Belmont that Smarty Jones almost won, a few jockey's were accused of "racing not to win," or whatever it's called.

I know that's not illegal, but it has to be frowned upon.

I think you HAVE to bet the jockey in a 20-horse field. The Derby is more about jockeys than horses with such a large field.

Obviously, horse matters, but screwy things happen in the Derby just because of the sheer amount of chaos going on. It's a great race and tons of fun, but it doesn't crown the best horse. That's why favorites have had such trouble.

Looking at the races, there was a string from 1997-2005 where one horse won two of the triple crown races every year but once. That's pretty amazing.

I remember cheering for War Emblem, Funny Cide, and Smarty Jones three years in a row, hoping they could all pull it off.

2007 was also a pretty good year for the triple crown. Curlin was pretty good.

You're right! I totally forgot about that. Smarty Jones WAS the horse that got screwed over. I completely blanked on that Belmont.

On the Derby - I do love the race. But the field needs to be cut down to a max of, say, 12. Which will never happen because they love the entry fees. There's too many horses with no business running for the roses. Hell, there's too many horses period. The Derby has become more of a demolition derby. It's whatever jockey can find some space.

Preakness is about speed, Belmont is about endurance. I guess that means, to be hokey, the Derby is about heart.

How much of an effect do you think that really had? Because Smarty Jones was leading when they came down the stretch anyway. Did he have to use more effort to get to the front of the field than he usually would have, maybe forcing him to tire out in the end?

Although the Derby is "the race" I love watching the Classic more than any race out there. But I also like watching the Arkansas Derby, probably because I grew up in Arkansas. The Wood, Santa, and the Florida runs to me arent that exciting as they are usually one horse fields. But then again I am probably biased.

pretty simple, he made his move too early. Birdstone was running around 4th the whole race then stepped on the gas when they made the clubhouse turn. Smarty Jones had already been running on all cylinders for a little while longer so he didn't have the kick to match Birdstone's surge.

Smarty Jones is by far the favorite horse of my relativley short life, but I don't think he's the best in that span.

i was born in 83.. since then i would rank them:

1. Sunday Silence
2. Cigar
3. Easy Goer
4. Curlin
5. Skip Away

really really tough to put together a list like that. that took me 15 minutes of thinking and reordering. it was hard for me to leave off Afleet Alex, Real Quiet and Smarty Jones, among others.

How old are you and I will name at least 10 horses better than Smarty Jones. Hell I'll take a stab and only go back 18 years. In no particular order and off the top of my head:
1. Ghostzapper
2. Curlin
3. Goldikova
4. Big Brown
5. Barbaro
6. Zenyata
7. Cigar
8. Point Given
9. Holy Bull
10. Lost in the Fog

I could go on, but to argue that Smarty was better than any of these horses would be your bad. I would also like to point out that Smarty came around in the crop of horses that was devistated by a disease that was causing mares to lose a ton of foals.

I don't watch any horseracing but the triple crown races.

Curlin was really good.

I understand all this. I was wondering if the jockeys who allegedly road not to win had any effect on his ride.

Master of Hounds and Decisive Moment are a couple of other potential Derby contenders.

i've watched that race many times, and IF that happened I don't think it affected Smarty that much. Birdstone was a damn good horse that year and was ridden by Edgar Prado. he won the Travers and faired well in the 04 Derby before getting bottled up.

interesting tid bit.. in all of his races Birdstone started in posts 7 through 11.

You want to see special? If so, go to youtube and look up Ghostzapper. Cigar was a beast no doubt, but Ghostzapper won Graded Stakes from 6 f to 1 1/4 miles. He is the best horse I have ever seen. Here is just a taste. :bow :

Damn. That was amazing.

Horseracing is something I should try to get into more. It is really fascinating.

I won a lot of money on the big Breeder's Cup race earlier this year. I hit a box trifecta or something and won over $800 off a $2 bet.

Ghostzapper was in a class of his own that year. he posted record times and blew away quality horses.

Since I live in horse country it has been something I grew up watching. Ghostzapper has been my favorite horse. Simply amazing. It's a shame injury knocked him off of the derby trail or else he may have rewritten history. As far as the derby this year, I have not been impressed by anyone except The Factor. That horse destroyed a quality field in the Rebel. Anyone know what the beyer was for him in that?

He had a two year old break it's maiden at Keeneland a few years back ROLLING from off the pace like that, when you couldn't win from the back. I thought we may have a champion, but I'm not sure he ever won again.
