Defensive penalties auto first down. Offensives penalties replay the down.

Is it just me or is this one of the most illogical parts of football other than to keep offensives moving?

It seems like penalties that happen during a play on the offense should be enforced and the down count/“loss of down” to balance out auto first downs called on D.

You basically give the offense extra chances to get the defense to commit a penalty that gives an auto first down no matter how sloppy you are on offense.

Ok so what would you do with an offensive hold on a touchdown play ?

Take the TD off the board, back em up 5 yards, loss of downs.

Huh?

Back 10 yards, down counts. Why is that a scenario you are worried about?

I think I misread your explanation of it. I like the idea considering it feels as though defenses are getting called for penalties much more now with current pi rules

They probably read your 2nd sentence as letting the play stand means the TD would stand

Got it. I see I did word it vague. “Loss of down” like it is for intentional grounding, but for all penalties that happen during a play.

I think pre snap penalties can still be no loss of down.

An offense can commit penalties a few plays in a row, it was still only second down, and then a defensive holding gives them an auto first. It’s strange and illogical to me

How about this one? Offense has the ball at the 2-yard line 1st and goal and is called for holding. They are backed up and now have a 1st and goal from the 12-yard line. Defense is called for a personal foul or any other penalty in the same scenario and the ball is moved (Half the distance to the goal) to the 1-yard line still 1st and goal. Why not just mark off the penalty yardage which would take you into the endzone and then declare it a TD? Just saying ..... LOL

Personally I think all defensive penalties should be replay the down unless the yardage penalized results in a first down. If a defense gets penalized on 3rd down, the offense gets rewarded with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down? It’s like getting your car totaled and insurance company giving you 3 new cars. It’s a bit much.

Exactly and I guess that is the other route to go for consistency (no auto first downs unless the yardages makes it a first!

Either way it seems really inconsistent and overpowered for offenses

I think I’ve had a thread on this topic before too

I never understood the “half the distance” to the goal penalty either. Why not just go as far forward as possible up until the inch line? For example, if the offense is on the 10 yard line and the Defense commit a 15 yard penatly, why does the offense only get 5 yards?

And again, they already have the rule written for PI to go to the goal line on the penalty yardage.

I suggest all fans that don't understand, work high school as a ref ,you'll realize you didn't know the rules like you thought in most cases, its not bad money, its fun,and there's a big shortage of refs out there. Lhsaa site has a list of all officials associations
