Danica got very lucky. She should be able to get back in.

It makes alot of sense to let go of steering wheel in an accident at high speeds. Nothing you can do but ride it out. It is also a bit tougher on the body to hold on the wheel. I can easily imagine a broken wrist or arm when you have your arms flailing around while getting battered on the race track.
