The thread wasn't asking who was the most popular athlete. It was asking who the biggest superstar was.

Soccer is the easiest sport to play, that is why it is played world wide. Sport is garbage.

Sport is an integral part of our society which almost completely prevents us all from becoming useless blobs of Big Macs and chicken fingers.

If other countries were good at football or basketball they would be the most popular. No one wants to sit around and see a game end 1-0.

Plenty of Europeans do love football and basketball already.

Pretty much nailed it. I'm too stupid to watch a game that doesn't have at least 10 homerun-goals.

Because it was unattractive basketball?

"Low scoring" hasn't affected the game too much it seems.

You do realize that in the EPL (England) they average over 2.5 goals a game right? In the Bundesliga (Germany) they average almost 3. In the Eredivisie (Dutch) they average over 3.

Manchester City scored 93 goals in 38 matches last season. They scored 4 goals or more 9 times throughout their season.

In the first week of this season, 2 teams scored 5 goals each in a match. There were also 3 different 3-2 matches and one 4-2 match last week.

In the first 30 matches of this season, only 4 matches had combined scores of 1 goal or less.

Inform yourself.

And so, the most popular sport in the world doesn't really have a bearing on the thread. Soccer is not super star driven. It is a great sport and all, but the interest in it is not as driven by its super stars.

When people tuned in to the World Cup, they were watching Spain vs The Netherlands. Ratings didn't suffer just because neither Ronaldo or Messi were playing. Most fans watched the NBA finals for Durant vs Lebron. The ratings definitely would have been lower if it was Griz vs 76ers.

Tiger Woods, Lebron, and Kobe are all bigger draws than the sport they play in. Basketball is very super-star driven. Soccer is not. Neither is football, really. At least not anywhere near the same extent as basketball.

It definitely depends on your definition of superstar. I could be convinced that it was any of the three i listed or Ronaldo depending on how you define it. However, the arguments the soccer lot were making(e.g. citing TV ratings of a game that Ronaldo didn't even play in) in the original thread on it were absolutely terrible.

Spain and Argentina are both very good at basketball. Soccer is still the most popular sport in those countries.

Pretty terrible reference since both of those teams are stacked completely full of superstars. Plus the World Cup is once every 4 years, so viewership will hardly drop regardless of which 2 teams make it to the final.

I see what you're saying, but you have the privilege of witnessing Lebron/Durant's superstardom through the eyes of an American. Go to England, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Italy and you will see how big those "superstars" really are.

It most certainly is. I can see how it's hard for you to understand it though given the relatively low popularity the sport has in this country.

As someone who watches soccer/football/basketball religiously, I will honestly say that I cannot think of a bigger superstar on an international platform than Ronaldo or Beckham. Lebron is undoubtedly huge though (my favorite American athlete).

I thought the 7-3 Auburn victory a couple of years ago was one of the most exciting games I had ever seen in the SEC.

do you really need me to make a connection that is that simple.

Lebron is a global icon and the best basketball player on the planet. It is completely plausible to believe he may be the most popular athlete in the world, especially if it has been done by a bball player before

3-2 over State was brilliant. I watch that game on a weekly basis.

Oh, and who can forget the instant classic...November 5...Armageddon...9-6!

This is false. Probably one of the worst statements I've ever read on this board.

This post is terrible. If fact, between that thread and the Andruw Jones thread, I have lost all faith in the MSB.

So are you a fan of cricket? They score in the 200's. Yeah, I didn't think so. I love that everyone thinks soccer games end 1-0.

That and the classic "no one wants to watch someone kick a ball around for three hours" comment that always seems to come up.

Hey, I don't care if you don't like soccer. But you should at least make somewhat intelligent statements, just for your personal well-being.

Yes, I do. You do realize what a super-star is right? Van Persie, Sneider, and Robin are all great players, but they aren't superstar' imo. Ronaldo and Messi are the only ones I would consider superstars right now. Everybody else is too far behind them
