Cubs fans (and any of you other heartless assholes who love basking in the Cubs misery), check out this article from the Chicago Sun Times today. Pretty interesting take on the attitude of Cubs fans (at least that one Cubs fan).
LINK

Some samples:

quote:

And most of the Cubs’ failings are not of the one-game, two-game type.

They are yearly, multifaceted fold-ups that come with hope, expectation and even — in those odd seasons of near-success — a kind of collective citizen giddiness that were it rewarded with a World Series championship might melt the North Side of Chicago.

But it has happened too often.

People have been hurt too much.

quote:

We are now working our way swiftly into the second century — century — of failure. I no longer believe I will live to see the team win it all.

And if they ever do?

I know I and many other Cubs fans will receive it not with a cheer but a sigh.

Methinks this guy doesn't know how much money the Cubs will have to play with next offseason. Out with the old and in with the new. Some of the guys on the field this year are just north of rotting corpses holding roster spots until the rennaissance in 2012.

When i want to think about the Cubs misery and how bad they are doing this year, i cannot help but couple those thoughts with how high their payroll is. The franchise is not cursed. They will win a world series one day. Their pitching staff is joke right now in my opinion and desperately needs a new (real) star and some fresh talent.

The best thing for the future of this club is to have a terrible start - which is taking place. They need to be a seller this year and trade some of their older vets and try and build back with young talent.

the only way to chnage things is fewer ticket sales. seats have been empty this year, but it doesnt matter, they are already paid for

You're assuming the payroll will stay at its current level. Word is the Ricketts' are in some serious debt right now. Check out this article...

quote:

A source with first-hand knowledge of the Cubs’ purchase deal and debt structure says it involves enough annual burden that fans shouldn’t count on the Cubs going after any big free agents for two or three years.

That’s consistent with the message chairman Tom Ricketts has pounded for the past year and a half — emphasizing the importance of player development in select speaking environments but shying away from less controlled media interviews.

quote:

What you see so far this year —specifically, what you saw Friday with a no-name lineup of prospects and fill-ins — might be here to stay longer than the already restless fan base might be able to stomach.

As one longtime talent evaluator said before Friday’s game, “Just saw your lineup. Who are these guys?’’

Get used to it.

quote:

Because even as the Cubs continue to rank among the top teams in baseball in ticket prices and even as they work, for now, with the biggest payroll in the National League, they have essentially become a small-market operator.

Attendance has gone down by 5,000 over that last two years. I remember watching the Cubs as a kid when Grace and Sandberg were there and they'd average over 40,000 every afternoon.

The shitstain on the field right now is miserable to watch.

It finally seems as though the fans care a little bit more about seeing a decent product on the field, and not so much about drinking beer in the bleachers.

Also, take into account that it has been 13 years or so now since WGN quit broadcasting the majority of Cubs games. If the current TV structure was in place when I was a kid, I probably wouldn't even be a Cubs fan. That's got to account for a little bit of the decline.

Ramirez - agreed.
Soriano - agreed.
Soto - not sure about his value?
Dempster - trade for sure
Rodrigo Lopez - no value to trade.
Pena - not much value to trade.

I would add Zambrano to the list as well only if you could get some good prospects for him.

Soriano

Who in the world is going to take him? First of all, he's being paid like $18 million for 3 more years after this one. Second, he's a huge liability in the field. Third, his bat is suited for about a 7 hole hitter. So, unless the Cubs are willing to pay just about all of his remaining contract just to get rid of him, he'll be around a while.

Soto

I'm still ok with Geo. He had a great rookie year that he hasn't been able to back up, but if the rest of the run producers in the lineup would do their jobs, he wouldn't stick out so much.

I agree with all of the rest.

I'm okay with Soto. But as always, if the Cubs can do better, they should. But they won't.

The rest of those terds can go. Pena has some value as a left handed power bat. The Cubs will have to eat some salary. Look, don't hate Soriano and Ramirez for what they are. Hate Jim Hendry for signing them to ludicrous contracts that kept them locked to the Cubs beyond their productive years. #18MM a year for Soriano for three years? WTH was he thinking?

There was a time when Ramirez was the best Cub since Sosa. He was really, really good when he was healthy.

Jacoby Jones will one day win a world series with the cubs. His chances of being a cub are pretty high it seems.

I'm ripping this off from somewhere else but here goes - I watched the Memorial Day game where Len and Bob broadcast from the stands in the" Ferris Bueller" area and Ricketts stopped by the broadcast. They talked about everything (How great Wrigley is, the weather, the food, etc) but the product on the field. I get that the product is not going to be bashed on air but damn man, say something to the effect that they haven't been playing well. Give me hope - but unfortunately he didn't. I'm afraid the current state of things are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

depends how they spend it

as a cardinals fan I'll get worried when their farm system picks up and/or they start signing motivated free agents on the right side of 30
