During the game against Buffalo, Hostetler was called in the game to replace Simms after Simms had suffered a foot injury. The Giants lost the game, dropping them to 11-3 on the year, but Hostetler was able to lead them to victories in their last two regular season games and their first playoff game against the Chicago Bears. In the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers, Hostetler suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter when Jim Burt tackled him below the knees. Although he was injured, Hostetler was able to walk off the field on his own and later returned to the game and engineered two late scoring drives, that culminated with a Bahr field goal, and a 15-13 victory. Hostetler started Super Bowl XXV; the Giants defeated the heavily favored Bills 20-19. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards with one touchdown. In 2008, ESPN ranked Hostetler's performance the 30th best quarterback performance in Super Bowl history. After reconsidering his retirement, he elected to return for the 1991 season.

Pretty similar path. Hope Foles ends his with a Super Bowl victory over a favored AFC opponent, too.

I like that analogy. Bills looked like the better team but Jeff was serviceable. he was then lured to the Raiders as a starter but was never quite good enough to hold that gig. But on 1 night he was good enough!

Hoss didn't do bad in LA, took them to the playoffs his first year and went to the Pro-Bowl in year two. Then they moved Oakland, where they were a .500 team under him. Raiders moved on to Jeff George and Hostetler went to DC, both were worse off.

Nick Foles took his own team to the playoffs once and once threw 7 touchdown passes in one game. His ability should have never been questioned and he should be a starter for somebody next year.

Hostetler was a real gamer. Could have been the SB MVP. I remember him diving near the sidelines for a crucial first down fairly late in that game.

I don't think fatass Parcells gave Hoss enough credit for how he came in and played that season.

The other obvious analogy (in the other direction) is 1972 Billy Kilmer. Sonny Jurgensen was injured and Kilmer led them to the Super Bowl, where he was destroyed by the unbeaten 72 Dolphins. Before that, he was a journeyman WR-turned QB for the 49ers and Saints, who was traded to the Redskins to be a backup so the Saints could make way for Archie Manning.

Might not be A popular choice on here but that was one of the best SB'S EVER............. Thurman Thomas was in beast mode and Billichick found A way to slow down that Buffalo offense...........

Chip Kelly got rid of all Foles' toys and got him beaten to a pulp in his unprotected QB system. I'm happy for him.

Speaking of 1972.. Earl Morrell came off the bench and kept the Dolphins unbeaten the rest of the year yet Griese was able to be back come SB time....

But Kilmer was tough as nails............

OJ was running with authority that night and that ball control game plan was genius, you hold the ball for 40 minutes in a football game and commit no turnovers that's imposing your will on another defense I bow down.

That was one of the most physical, violent games in NFL history.

Scott Zolak

Not sure what he has to do with this thread, but I do know two things about Zolak-

The first time he got in NFL game was against the Saints, and he replaced Tommy Hodson for the Pats.

Zolak's father was Joe Montana's high school head coach.

He was pretty good with the Raiders, especially his first year. Raiders lost a close one to the Bills in the divisional round. One of my first heartbreaks as a kid.
