for all we know Liberty likely has been trying to schedule P5 teams and no one will play them. Should they be penalized for that?

Your mindset is that of a simpleton. We played the schedule our conference structured for our first year in conference play. I could not care less what you think about it. Apparently people who know what they are doing decided our record was better than that of SMU. Take it up with them. Probably would have helped not to lose to 5-7 TCU.
Enjoy whatever bowl that SMU was selected for. Win or lose, I will enjoy the Fiesta.

Yea. SMU was apparently very stupid for maintaining their rivalry with TCU despite TCU moving to p5 conference. They should’ve scheduled Sam houston st instead

You can say it a thousand times. And a thousand times over it does not matter. The CFP said otherwise. They make the decision.

You can whine and cry all you want. I do not care and (more importantly) the CFP does not care. Enjoy the Wasabi Fenway Bowl. I am told that Boston is a wonderful place to visit over the holidays. Should be a good matchup between SMU and Boston College.
Your other option is to sue the CFP. I hear that FSU and the ACC are putting together a lawsuit. Maybe you can join in on it. You never know. Might be awarded the Fiesta Bowl retroactively in 2024.
