John Peterson, who recently finished 2nd as an amateur on a nationwide Tour event boasted:

quote:

“I knew I could beat all those guys,” Peterson told Golf World magazine.

And he was just getting warmed up.

“The top guys in college, the top 20 or 30 guys, can beat the top 20, 30 guys on the PGA Tour,” Peterson said. “Maybe with the exception of two or three guys who are constantly up there, like a Matt Kuchar or Luke Donald … those top 20 college guys will beat those top 20 or 30 PGA Tour guys, if given the opportunity.”

The outrageous comment drew a chuckle from Scott Verplank, who won a PGA Tour event in 1985 before his senior year at Oklahoma State.

“Great to have that enthusiasm, isn’t it?” Verplank said yesterday, sarcastic as ever.

“It’s not 20 or 30 guys on tour,” Verplank said. “It’s about 200 or 300 players out here who are just as good. That’s really not a wise statement.

Then Tom Lewis (A) of England stated:

quote:

On any given week, when you give amateurs a shot, they’re going to do it because we’re ruthless,” English said. “All college events are very competitive, and you learn how to go out there and win. The college golf system is awesome. You see guys coming out every year ready to compete and showing it off.”

Then the hammer gets dropped on these two:

quote:

“Frankly, there aren’t 30 guys in college who are going to be on our tour in three years,” said David Duval

Seems somewhat far from the truth.

eta: It's likely that he knowingly stretched the truth to get his point across.

Not really. He didn't say they can beat them routinely.

A top 20 NCAA golfer is a + HDCP'er and can handle the pressure of a tournament. So yes, it is plausible that a NCAA top20 golfer can beat an PGA top20 golfer.

PGA Pros are just pissed that someone took a jab at them.

My disagreement with the statement doesn't lie in the top college guys' inability to play with the world's top 30 golfers but in numbers 5-30 to play with the world's top 30 golfers.

eta: Golfer, seems like there'd be a pretty significant dropoff after the NCAA's five or so best golfers? No?

The top 10 or so college guys can compete on any given day with a top tour player .. The issue is that there is really no drop between the number 5 ranked PGA golfer and the 205 ranked PGA player ...

whereas there is a HUGE drop from the best college player to the 200th best player

I agree. I think Peterson's comment is getting taken a bit out of context...

Just like a Single-A pitcher can strike Pujols out 5 times in a row, but over a season Albert is going to bat .500+ against him.

On any given day or tournament, these top NCAA golfers can compete with the top Tour players. That's all he was saying IMO.

No he did not. From your OP:

quote:

“The top guys in college, the top 20 or 30 guys, can beat the top 20, 30 guys on the PGA Tour,

That does not imply they will, but that they have the skills and the talent to compete.

A PGA touney? Come on

Plauible yes. It is also plausible that the BR City Champ on e great and lucky day can beat Phil on one of his worst and unlucky days

Cantlay finished +1 at the US Open this year...you're telling me that all of the top20 on the PGA Tour this year finished ahead of him?
