Didn't say they weren't holdbacks.

I wasn't going to mention that

I was coaching junior high a few years ago and the head coach installed a new defense every week to match the offense. Problem is the kids never knew what to do on a consistent basis.

Like most have said teach them football playing skills. They can learn scheme later.

At any level of football the less you have on the better. Offensively for 5th and 6th have one outside zone, one inside zone and one power or counter play. Throw in a screen and for the throw game be great at stops, slants and streaks. If you want to spice it up so that you can pretend like your bill Walsh you can add different formations and run all the same plays. Defensively you only need one front And maybe two coverages.(man and 4) Simple, simple, simple, simple

Football has definitely changed. I seriously doubt my junior high coach had the first clue what any other junior high was running.

It was a complete mystery what was going to come off the bus to play us on game day.

And that is what makes it so simple. The 2 or 3 fronts I run are always cover two schemes and NEVER have less than two safeties. The only thing that changes based on the front is the number of linebackers/d linemen because the one kid switches.

Pair that with positional responsibilities instead of overall play calls and it is stupid simple so that the kids can grasp it. People generally freak out over perceived complication, but I run it just as the guy talking about offense described. The same plays from multiple sets. The kids never realize what the other kids on defense need to do, so they focus on their personal responsibility. As long as they give their all, you never really have them in a bad place and they don't have to worry about overall scheme.

Yeah they switch film just like high school now. Doesn't really matter most of those schools haven't changed in forever anyway.

I got to see inside our local junior high the last couple years. They broke down film and had percentages of how many times each play was run, percent of run/pass with certain formations, etc. Then again, they went undefeated and the HC is now the DC of a local high school.

I don't understand why people are still teaching kids to tackle with their face and head. That's the dumbest thing you could teach a kid and the reason why concussions continue to be a huge problem all the way up to the NFL level.

Youth coaches should be teaching kids to tackle with their shoulders. Keep your head up and put your shoulder where they've taught kids for years, and still do, to put their heads at.

It is really simple. Why hardly anybody coaches this tackling technique is beyond me

What?

My son has been taught to tackle that way for years now by every coach he has had.

Tackle with their shoulders

Hope the kid doesn't play baseball. He won't after he tears his labrum/dislocates his pitching arm tackling with his shoulder.

Point being, it's a violent game. There isn't a perfect way to tackle and never get injured.

Better than brain damage.

Of course it's violent. But using your shoulder is much safer than using your head which just so happens to contain your most vital organ

Don't play the game. Play soccer. If you play for any significant amount of time, you will get hurt.

It's much safer because you will make fewer tackles and avoid contact all together.

What position? I played from 5 to 18 and both shoulders sound like Pop Rocks when I move my arms.

ETA: Both shoulders dislocated multiple times, torn labrum in right.

Lol you are exactly one of the dumbasses I was talking about.

Yes kids use your fricking head and face to tackle people running full speed at you

You should get a job with the NFL. Their dumbasses are teaching heads up tackling to kids still.

I played everything from Qb, RB and WR on offense. LB, CB and Safety on defense throughout peewee to college
