ESPN needs to stop forcing this made up "tradition".
Why? The NBA has played on Christmas every year except its first season ever and the 1999 lockout season that didn't begin until February.

The NBA isn't as much of a tradition as going on the internet and being blasé and dismissive about everything in an attempt to hide your addiction to the terrible programming on ESPN, but it's a tradition nonetheless. As long as the NBA and Christmas exist, there will be NBA games on Christmas.

Every fan wins by playing the games. If you don't want to watch, you don't. For fans that do, there are games.

Kinda the same with bowl games, I never understood why so many people are so adamant about there being sso many people bowl games.

The thing is that NBA has Christmas to itself. It's a chance to pull in casual fans. I watched the first half of the Knicks game and it was God awful to sit through. Knicks looked like they couldn't give two shits about being out there. If any casual fans were watching this afternoon, they sure as hell won't be watching anymore NBA until maybe playoffs.

Don't know if this was your first Knicks game this season, but that's par for these Knicks' course. Not exclusive to Christmas.

Also, no coincidence that the markets represented by the 19 teams are t1 t1 t2 t2 5 9 13 17 28 29.

On the business end of things, we can't deny David Stern for being savvy. He knows what he's doing on that end.

The Knicks blow this year yet because they are the Knicks they get a Christmas National TV matchup while Portland is no where to be found.
The Knicks are the team most responsible for the Christmas NBA tradition. They'll pretty much always get a game if they want one. Also flexing these matchups is virtually impossible.

The Lakers/Heat matchup is stale.
Having watched the game, I can conclude that you are mistaken.

Watching the Nets play at noon made me not want to watch basketball for the rest of the day, they are so bad. But this Houston game has been great so far.

I was there, and it made me not want to ever watch sports again. The first half was competitive, though.

Don't expect to see Christmas without the Nets and Knicks anytime soon. Biggest tv market in a city that is a popular Holiday destination, and most importantly, the biggest population of people from ethnic backgrounds that do not observe Christmas.

Happy to report I tuned in to the HOU/SA game only. Highly satisfying matchup, those absolutely horrid unis notwithstanding.
