No Saints fan that is rational thinks he was out to get the Saints.
The Saints had a Pay for Performance pool. Fact. Goodell got wind of it. There may have been an incident where Vilma "fake" put up 10k at Gregg Williams request as a motivational ploy before the NFCCG, and then returned the money.
And then:
Boom. And who can do something about it? He's got a CBA in his back pocket that makes him God. He played the media like a fiddle and has fans saying they don't need to see evidence! Burn them!
Goodell played it well. But he went too far with Vilma and Fujita, and now they are fighting back.

Sure it is still a rule.
But if that was the case, hypothetically, these penalties would be on par with the police finding a dude smoking a joint and arresting him as a felon who is some kingpin drug dealer.
Well you kinda took that line out of context.
And yes, if they are being payed to perform then I would agree that it is a harsh punishment...but according to the only man that really matters, it was pay to injure.
And then that comes down to comment earlier of..."well no one got hurt"....which I really hope you can see makes no sense.

Like I said, I'm not even saying I believe the hypothetical I threw out, just throwing it out there.
But he could have gotten wind of something, coulda been from any team, and decided to take a stand then and there, hoping it'd protect the NFL's arse in the future.
A pay for performance(INTs and sacks and stuff like that) IMO wouldn't be called a bounty.
A bounty is to take out someone.
If it was simply pay for performance, I don't believe any Saints players/coaches would have gotten such harsh punishments, no chance.
So, I conclude that the penalties are for pay for injuring players. But I don't know if that ever happened, I simply don't.

And the players union dropped the ball big time on that one.

Less than a year for both NFL & NBA getting new CBA's but it pretty much feels like the players of both leagues got the short end of these new deals.
Salaries, contract length, player discipline, whatever you can think of it seems like players took a step back or couldn't get out of a shitty situation.

Perfectly put.

From what Hasselbsck just said on SportsCenter... The stuff Carter probably did is akin to MLB when a pitcher hits the opposing team if his teammate gets plunked. Same thing in the NFL, if you take a cheap shot expect for a big lineman to get you back. Everyone is just protecting themselves I guess
