Am I the only a-hole that thinks Chipper is/was vastly overrated? He seems like he was injured every season. Some people think he is a 1st ballot HOF'er and I think that is insane. Opinions?

It wouldn't even be a question if he hadn't moved to LF to make room for Vinny Castilla. At that point in his career, he carried the Braves and was a perennial all-star 3B. I don't think he ever recovered physically from that, even when he was moved back to 3B. Still, I'd be shocked if he doesn't make the Hall.

Great player, great numbers, but like griffey he was hurt all the time. Also, I think the post season failures of the Braves hurt him in the eye of the public, if they would have won a few more championships he would be more respected. Definitely a HOFer though, feel bad about the knee

Being the 2nd best switch hitter in the history of baseball is worth something.

17 years with the same organization. Averaged 133 games a season. Average of 26 homeruns a season. Average of 88 RBI's a season. .306 Career batting average. 1 MVP award. 6 All Star Appearances.

You're right...the guy is horrible.

only Mantle and Murray have more HRs by a switch hitter. He's got a RoY, MVP, batting champion, 6x all star...

Yes he is very overrated these days but I would still think hes a first ballot HOF

-Career BA over .300
-1999 MVP
-1995 World Series Champion
-2008 Batting Title
-3rd best switch hitter all time

How do you not like those numbers?

He is a very good player, and his numbers should get him in the HoF pretty easily.

Now that being said, I also believe that he tended to get the Mike Vick treatment in adoration in that a lot of people seemed to think that Chipper was the Braves team and organization when he was simply just a piece of a bigger puzzle. As someone said once when discussing him for MVP during the late 90s - you could take Chipper away from the Braves and they would have still be a hell of a team with Smoltz, Glav, Maddux, Grissom, Justice, etc.

There were times that he may not have gone 100% - and I honestly believe that led to his first knee injury in '94 when he was halfassing it down the line on what appeared to be a routine groundout and then when he realize it was going to be close he tried to beat it and blew the knee - but a lot has to be said for his dedication to the team when he easily could have gone and played somewhere else probably for more money and better post season prospects.
