did anyone see him hit the ball off his face last week? Did not look like it felt good.

Kyle Schwarber is hitting 7-11 with 2 HR and 8 RBI with a 1/1 K/BB thru is first 3 pro games at Boise

Have they played him solely at catcher so far? I just can see any realistic chance that he stays at catcher but man that'd be nice.

and obligatory CALL HIM UP!!

Two at catcher, one at DH. I don't care where he plays in the field, honestly. He's probably best suited for 1B, but hopefully he finds a home in the OF.

I'm worried about Bryant. He hasn't hit a HR in 5 games. Is he now a bust?

He's completely useless and the Cubes are going in the toilet.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Kris Bryant won the Southern League HR Derby.

Kyle Schwarber started in LF for Boise and had two hits, one a triple.

Jeffrey Baez had two steals.

The Cubes make Samardzija a new extension offer; could be the signal that they're gearing up to compete.

Remember when Kris Bryant went 0-5 with 5 K's in his first game at Boise? I think that is the only negative thing in his entire minor league career. I wish baseball could fast forward to 2015.

any analysis of how he played. I still think that's the only position that he could play for the cubs (or the DH if baseball further shits itself with that)

And does this now give Schwarber more triples as a professional than bryant? Clearly bryant is a bust.

the cynic in me thinks the last part of the BN story on shark is the only real take away.

Put me in the 'this is for trade leverage' camp.

No, nothing much at all. BN didn't say anything, either.

As far as Samardzija is concerned, I'm going to maintain that I want the Cubs to sign him. I'd much rather the Cubs pay him as opposed to a free agent. That's my personal opinion and it probably isn't the best opinion.

My hope is that the front office recognizes the comeback half seasons by Tony Ballgame and Castro. Perhaps Renteria has been integral in their approaches. Chris Bosio seems to know what he's doing as well.

I'm not saying it isn't trade leverage because we will never know for sure, but the facts appear to be that the Cubs offered Samardzija a deal. And I'm hoping this is the front office recognizing that their window to contending is not far off.

I agree with this. And i also would prefer to extend shark. I just don't see it happening and it's interesting timing that the extenstion talk heat up after natioanl guys (like buster on his podcast) talking about all the chatter involving the giants getting in on the mix and the cubs actually fielding offers for shark. Like i say, it's the cynic in me.

Likely don't extend shark, trade him, but we'll still spend a lot of money this offseason. I'm sure you read that piece that right now only like 50 million is on the books for next year so even with catching up to the league average (and i'm going to bastardize this) i think is around 85, that's 35 million you'd expect the cubs to spend, and they've said they're carrying money over from the rather paltry off season this year. So yea...i think the window is opening. next year likely still need some luck to get a WC spot but it's realistic i think (now i'll wait for someone to tell me i'm fricking retarded, because MSB).

I really am hoping for the Cubs spending some money on the OF. It's pretty awful right now. But yes, I did see that about the payroll. I'm just interested to see who they spend on and how it may differ from Hendry's philosophy.

Some guy on fb was saying that if the Cubs do trade Samardzija, which I think is likely, they will get a very good return (obviously). But the beauty of it is they'll still have the money to spend on a starter AND they'll net some top flight prospects.

The only rub is that now you have a hole to fill at SP and the OF, instead of already having the SP sewn up and just focusing on the OF.

That said, I do not know what the FA market for OFers is next year. It could be terrible. But we have to do better than Chris Coughlan, Ryan Sweeney and Junior Lake (I don't mind Lake staying in the OF for the majority of starts, though).

I think the performance of jake arrietta makes this a little bit easier to take (assuming it continues). But you're right, we'll be trying to sign one, if not two top tier pitchers this offseason but at least we'll have them for more than just next season, so really that day was coming anyway it's just speeding up the process.

I also don't know what teh FA OF market looks like, but we've gotta do work there. Our entire outfield is terrible.

Cubs always get connected to heyward (don't know why, unless it's because when the braves were handing out extensions he didn't get one and epstoyer loves a young guy) but you gotta assume they're going to try in the offseason to trade for a guy like him (or in a pipe dream world, carlos gomez)

I honestly would really like if the Cubs sign both Wood and Samardzija, if they can, and then you have some leeway to see if Arrieta is finding his way as a pitcher. I had no idea about this, but Wood is actually younger than Arrieta.

You really think the Cubes would trade in the division for Carlos Gomez? Or did you mean CarGo?

Schwarber doubles, 2 for 2.

Followed by a BB. This dude is making Low A ball look silly. 11-18, 3 HR's, 9 RBI, 1 2B and 1 3B.
