Alford did know of the rule according to some sources. Regardless, letting him get on the bus & then throwing him off the bus AND then berating him in front of his teammates as being the reason they lost to UK has no defense.Throwing Alford under the bus like that just speaks to BK's personality or lack of same. As for his father, just what I recall reading in S.I. way back then.

We need more people like Bobby, minus the choking of players and what not

Bobby Knight is POS. Giving back after you beat up players and acted like a dick for 50 years doesn't fix things.

No wonder DJT thinks he's a great man. They're cut from the Same cloth.

A lot of butthurt in here for a man who has been more successful in his field than any poster in this thread.

I won't defend some of the things he's done, but he was the most entertaining coach I've seen (minus contact with his players). The video of him making all those facial expressions when a reporter asked him about his "game face" was priceless. I wish he was still on ESPN.

Knight is so polarizing you almost cannot have a constructive discussion about him. But to say as a coach he is overrated is insane. He did stay too long because kids didn't want to play for a guy with his demeanor. But he had a 25 year run that was ridiculous and if it wasn't for two key injuries right before the tournament he probably would have won 2 more titles. I liked him by I always understood that he was a man of incredible and numerous (more than you know) charitable actions who at the same time crossed the line with his own players that seemed to go against everything he had just done for some unknown family. I have read a lot about him and the pieces that are fair I find leave me frustrated over what could have been with Knight.

Which shows you the difference between the 70's and 80's kid and the 90's - present kid.

The transformation was to his protege. Knight could coach in an era which accepted him - once eras changed...he couldn't change. He became a dinosaur and his pupil became the gold standard of the huggy-brand of sports.

Knight was - well, kids expected coaches to be hard-asses...our coaches in H.S. football in the 80's cussed us out non-stop, grabbed us by the facemasks...nobody thought anything about it...and they were teachers too - could have, would have been fired today. You can't yell at kids now...or touch them.

So it moved to the 90's and his touchy-feely huggy protege, Coach K.

Bobby Knight was always depicted in pictures screaming at one of his players.

Coach K was always shown hugging his players after a loss...hugging Grant Hill, Trajon Langdon, Sheldon Williams, Boozer, Elton Brand...

"Sorry, my bad guys. You have to nothing to be blamed for...despite playing like shite. It's all me. I failed you."

Compared to Knight cussing out his players after a loss. Go on Youtube and listen to his tirade against his team after a loss in 1987.

Those early 90's teams were REALLY good. If Henderson doesn't get hurt I thought that was their year.

I'll always remember him as the guy who kicked his best rebounder (Mike Giomi) off a bad team because the kid kept skipping classes.

Yeah 1991-1992 was Knight's last real hurrah.

And that was also the years Coach K took over college basketball upsetting Vegas.

College basketball totally changed in the 90's.

80's basketball - the characters, the coaches, you had the ACC and the Big East just cussing each other out in the press. Big10 was still considered the best.

College bball was by far my favorite sport. I played at a really good Div II school ( too short and too white) and we followed it obsessively. I understand you can't tell kids to stay but I would love to see a baseball rule in basketball letting kids go wherever they wanted but if they signed they stay 3. Patrick Ewing when he graduated was as recognizable a name as 95% of NBA players.

Oh yeah.

I knew more about Hoya Paranoia than I did about the Celtics and Lakers.

Alford was going to be the next Larry Bird! Pacers fans cried when he wasn't drafted by them in 1987 and they took Reggie Miller - who? from UCLA?

Went to every home Georgetown game Ewing's Freshman year. Sleepy Floyd, Freddy Brown (what a terrible mistake), Gene Smith (lock down defender on the perimeter), Bill Martin, etc. Great basketball team that gave a championship away.

I was in the Dome and if they would have gotten the ball to Floyd they weren't stopping him. Worthy and Floyd put on a show that night.
