I think the BlueGrass is shaping up to be the best field of all the prep races.

Bluegrass:
Hard not to like Dornoch and Sierra Leone. A lot of the field is coming from running on Synthetic which makes this harder for me to handicap. The Lukas horse just ran two weeks ago and is coming back. However after watching Just Steel in the Arkansas Derby, wouldn’t shock me to see him hit the board. And it would be great for Lukas to get two horses in the Derby.

Tough one for me to handicap but I definitely like one of the inexperienced Cox horses to possibly get up in third.

Wood Memorial- haven’t seen the draw yet but I have been very interested in Deterministic all season. If he looks impressive at this distance I’m hoping to get some good odds on him the first Saturday in May. And Tuscan Sky could possibly become a real Derby contender should he win this race.

But come Kentucky Derby if Fierceness runs a race like he did on Saturday I’m not sure who can beat him. I understand it was a weaker field, but winning by 13 lengths in a grade 1 FL Derby is incredibly impressive.

I’d be interested to hear anyone else who may be interested’s thoughts.

I love horse racing, but I don't follow the sport. Thanks for the post; it's very interesting.

I’ve always loved it but these last five years or so I’ve really gotten into it. Honestly it’s my favorite sport these days. Still so much to learn about it.

The Louisiana Derby was great this year. Watching Catching Freedom come down that last stretch from last to first like a runaway locomotive was fun to watch. Hope he gets a good trip in the Derby.

Hard to see the record times in the biggest races and not say Secretariat.

But I think from recent years, Gun Runner was maybe my favorite to watch race.

It’s a shame we won’t see Baffert’s horses in the Derby. Muth looks legit but that Arkansas Derby field was lacking. I was never a believer in Timberlake. He will likely have a great career at a mile.

Even though Nysos wasn’t going to run, that horse may be pretty damn special. Excited to see him later in the year.

I love Secretariat and hate Man o' War, but I think Secretariat's losses put him behind Man o' War.

majority of the time, the bluegrass and wood winner are immediate chuck outs for picking derby winners

I wouldn’t chuck any of them out just because of the prep race.

The second place Wood Memorial horse I believe came in fifth in the derby and fourth in the Belmont last year.

Hell the 2023 Bluegrass winner placed third in the Belmont and third in the Travers. Pretty far away from a horse I’d just chuck because of the prep race.

I am interested in Deterministic this weekend in the Wood. I also think that race could yield another long shot winner. Merit and Tuscan Sky are horses that intrigue me very much. I will have a win bet on Tuscan Sky for certain.

At the Bluegrass the pace could set up nicely for Sierra Leone. Dornoch will be at or near the front early, likely with Good Money. I hope he can hold on because I have a nice Derby future and need hope going into the Derby. And Just A Touch is a very interesting horse as well.

Can’t wait.

But if you like Fierceness in the derby, I’d put a future on him now because I’m not sure you’ll get better odds come post time.

In my opinion this year’s Florida Derby was the weakest field of all the prep races but that was such an impressive win.
