Seems to me he gets mad a lot and then tries to play it off like he doesn't care.

I think he was joking. Don't think Bill has done one in a few years. Bill is definitely struggling with being likable lately though.

He's a terrible interviewer to the point where even interesting guests that he gets I have no interest in listening

He steers topics too much and overcrowded the conversation to point where it's awkward. When interviewing black people he almost always tries to have some forced deep discussion on race relations. The Lowe interview was the first one I listened to in monthss because I had to get away from Patriots bs

Chris hardwick on the nerdiest does the same thing but with comedy just to remind everyone he is a comedian.

Someone dug up a tweet from 2010 of him calling out Dave Cameron and Fangraphs for using the format, so I guess he isn't joking. Very petty, if he is serious. And by all accounts, Keri is one of the nicest, most likable guys around.

He will not let his guests finish a thought. He thinks he's the star of every interview. He will stop them in the middle to force an analogy from a movie 30 years old and just talk over them the entire time.

Pretty sure he still does a yearly trade value column

Pretty much the only writing he does now. Even his mailbags, he just does the "yup these are my readers" shite for 80 percent of them

Bill Simmons is a classic case of guy with opinions on one subject that make him popular, believing that his opinions on all subjects are marketable. No one gives a shite what you think about the bachelor or the Oscars or for fricks sake politics.

People liked your teen wolf and Back to the Future references on sports. That doesn't give you license to spout nonsense on every topic.

It doesn't have anything that would alert you that its a joke. It isn't topical, there isn't a clear punchline, he doesn't have a history of busting Jonah's balls on the net. In fact, Simmons has previously called out similar premises of other unrelated writers on twitter. Everything points to it being legit. If Simmons goes the "joke" route, that's probably the most damning indictment of him as a writer. It is basically the worst joke in the history of comedy.

He made a great point years ago about the demise of Eddie Murphy as a comedian. He said Murphy got too famous, insulated himself from regular people and unknowingly cut himself off from his comedic inspirations.

Simmons has sort of done the same thing with Grantland and now the Ringer. He has surrounded himself with 20 something year old SJW Northwestern grads in Los Angeles and lost touch with his common man "Sports Guy" persona

Yep, he was Barstool before Barstool, common man shite. Now all of his shite appeals to 21 year old art majors. Not a whole lot of intersect on that Venn Diagram

I think that's why he hates barstool so much, because they are picking up where he started before ESPN and then sky rocketed it while keeping grounded.

My take is he is the E-Myth and Peter Principle personified.

What made Simmons famous was his writing. Now that rarely gets done, and many have lost interest in his ventures because of it. He wants to be more than a writer, but no one is in to his other concepts.

I liked the 30 for 30s and Grantland. I think he's a creative guy who needs someone to ground the frick out of him when he gets too far off the rails. He surrounded himself with yes men and SjW and he's isolated himself from what made him originally good, being a common fan.

Exactly. I remember reading Simmons back in college, and that was 12+ years ago. He's lost whatever he had. Even the mailbags weren't that great the last time I read them. It was slightly better than Clay Travis taking 3 questions and writing 9 paragraph responses.

Fair enough. As to 30 for 30, my explanation is that sports documentaries are 1) in his wheel house (sports); 2) inherently interesting without featuring Simmons's opinion; and 3) even if you disregard 1 and 2, they aren't Simmons forward so they avoid the aggrandizement, self-referencing, and masturbatory issues that have come to represent his more recent work.

Grantland largely falls into the same thing. As Simmons becomes more a manager, he loses his fans who liked his shtick. At the Ringer, he doesn't write nearly as much. As such, it doesn't drive as much traffic to the site to see whatever else they're doing over there.

Or a reference to the '86 Celtics or how much better player X would be if he played for Brad Stevens or how much better and smarter Brad Stevens is than person X.

Yeah everything somehow is like the 86 celtics

"Yeah so we're walking down the street and..."

"OH yeah that reminds me of the way Larry Bird used to walk in that 1986 finals!"

"Umm yeah?"
