"Big Ten Surrenders Fight To Bring College Football Playoff To The Midwest"

If the Big Ten, which has the most to gain on the issue yet is trying to lose, then campus playoff games aren't happening. In an effort to help the Rose Bowl, the conference is willing for a playoff to also be staged in Miami Gardens and Glendale, and so on, rather than Columbus and Ann Arbor.

Possible home-field advantage for Big Ten teams? We love the Rose Bowl.
Making the elements, which Big Ten teams are presumably better equipped to handle, a factor in the playoffs? We love the Rose Bowl.
Showcasing the incredible game-day environment of Camp Randall, Happy Valley or the Big House? We love the Rose Bowl.
Not requiring fans, students and players' families to continue to make lengthy postseason trips? We love the Rose Bowl.
Creating economic impact in the league's hometowns? We love the Rose Bowl.
Not taking discretionary spending out of the region and into California or Florida? We love the Rose Bowl.
Not playing games in opponents' home regions, states, cities or even stadiums? We love the Rose Bowl.
If you hate campus so much, how about compromising and staging neutral-site semifinal games in Indianapolis or Detroit, where the money would be so welcome? Sorry, we love the Rose Bowl.

"It would be a competitive advantage to have semifinal games at home fields … but the bowls have been good to us," Nebraska AD Tom Osborne said.

it's too bad that the conferences are going to let the bowls have all the money again.

I will never understand the unwavering loyalty college football has to the bowl games, which are the most corrupt organizations in the nation not affiliated with Congress.

I've joked for a while that the bowls are run by the mob.
Leaving 100's of millions of dollars on the table under the guise of the kids enjoy the bowl expirience is one of the most cynical bs lines of all time.

It's a shame. As a season ticket holder there is nothing I'd like more than to see a playoff game at Ohio State or to travel to one of the other revered stadiums around the country for a game.

If they asked the players what do you think they'd perfer. A home playoff game or maybe a playoff game at LSU say or a trip to the Fiesta Bowl?
A home playoff game would be better for players and their families, better for fans, make more money for the schools, but nah, we don't want to do that because it "the bowls have been good to us".
That's like saying we shouldn't fly because trains were good to us.

Exactly. In life and business we have to adapt and adjust but these archaic bowl allegiances are allowed to remain in the way of progress.

What's really stupid is you could still have bowls. They are talking about a 4 team playoff, even at 8. you can still have your bowls. They have a 68 team tourney and still have the NIT.

Part two is the kicker. You think an Ohio St player wouldn't relish the chance to go down to the Swamp and kick the Gators' arse in their backyard? Or an LSU fan wouldn't want to punk Michigan in the Big House? It's not just home playoff games which would be great, but ROAD playoff games. I'd far prefer to go to Eugene than play them in the Fiesta Bowl in that antiseptic stadium. Hard to get a hotel room? So what? Drive.

I wanted to see MSU's reaction to this since Hollis got called out. The responses mainly seemed to be that any national championship format is still a fraud, only Big Ten titles have real substance, the Rose Bowl is the reward for that, and why give SEC teams more shots at home games, etc., etc.

Fact, no Big Ten football team has played a home football game in December. Their fans whine about not being able to take advantage of their home fields in winter weather, but they purposely end their seasons to avoid that weather.

I think most Big 10 fans would rather do away with the bowl system and go to a playoff. It is not the fans that are in the way on this, it is the college presidents, athletic directors, bowl presidents and committees, host cities and conference commissioners.

This is what I always thought was so funny about the whole cold weather argument from Big Ten fans. They honestly think SEC teams would wilt under the intense cold of mid November or earlier temps. It isn't like the entire SEC footprint other than maybe Gainesville, FL doesn't regularly drop below freezing several times during the heart of winter.
P.S. I was a little kid when Alabama beat Illinois in Bear Bryant's last game at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis and remember it being very cold during the game (temps in the teens during the game). The cold didn't keep Alabama from beating cold weather Illinois that night.

? not sure that is true; i think the typical college kid would look fwd to getting away for a bowl game...
on the other hand, if there is no home field advantage, what difference is there between being a #1 or a #4 seed?

I LOVE to win on the road. Its glorious to watch silent, glum crowds file out of BDS or the Swamp after an LSU win there
I can only image how much better it would be if LSU won a playoff game at Texas or Nebraska.

I don't think it is so much a cold weather argument as opposed to actually having a quasi home game for a lot of south and west coast teams during bowl season. USC plays in LA in the Rose Bowl a lot; Florida, Miami, FSU seem to play in Florida a lot; LSU plays in New Orleans.
The main advantage is the lesser travel for the teams and the fact that fans don't have to travel very far. Factor that most of the time the southern or west coast team is also more talented on the field, then this is a very hard obstacle to overcome.

Depending on when they would schedule the home playoff round, the losers could still go to a bowl and the winners obviously would go on to a neutral site for the NCG just like now. But I bet most players would rather play for a NC, even if it meant no trip to Seaworld.
And if the bowl expirience is oh so important, why is the B1G also proposing 7-5 as a cut off for making a bowl rather than 6-6?

seems like in the 80's 7-4 UCLA would beat a 10-1 B1G team a lot. Ronnie Harmon ring a bell?
