The Big Ten Conference has established a new benchmark in the how-high-is-up world of college sports finance: It recorded nearly $759 million in revenue during its 2018 fiscal year.

The figure, which far exceeds any comparable annual figure for a college sports conference, was revealed in a new federal tax return that the conference provided Wednesday in response to a request from USA TODAY. It is a year-over-year revenue increase of 48 percent, with the conference reaching $512.9 million in fiscal 2017.

In February, the Southeastern Conference reported just under $660 million in revenue for fiscal 2018, resulting in an average of $43.7 million being distributed to the 13 member schools that received full shares.

If all this stuff about paying for player likeness comes to be, the bidding wars between the SEC/B1G is going to be out of control.

Some of the B1G schools have seemingly stuck to the holier than thou attitude they have had for decades. If they allow you to pay players in some way, then these schools who are huge schools with big pockets (Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue) and recent limited wins in recruiting will start getting better players and paying them market rates.

I think the payment for players would have to come through the NCAA.

The conferences would pay the NCAA some sort of "tax" for the pool of money going to players, along with a massive chunk of the NCAA's own revenue.

Then all NCAA athletes would get something like $400 a month stipend.

That's my guess. But I haven't done the math.

That's true, most of Michigan's greatest accomplishments came in the 1800s

What if I told you.... they already do. If you live off campus and are on scholarship you are allowed to receive the cost of what it would cost to live on campus in the form of a monthly stipend. NCAA athletes also get food stipends, clothing stipends, travel stipends, and others that are perfectly legal

I love how ignorant people are in the "pay players" debate. Too many act like they get nothing at all.

Based on the little I've read/heard, the NCAA will NOT be paying players more than they do for living expenses/tuition etc.

I believe the additional money will only be paid to those athletes for use of their likeness etc.

So if they make a new NCAA game and put Trevor Lawrence on the front, or a Clemson guy who looks a lot like him, then he gets some sort of monetary bonus. I have NO clue how they are going to regulate this, but that is what I've seen so far.

It may end some of the under the table stuff that goes on now, and if it does in fact do that then schools who refused to be as dirty as others will potentially benefit

Put the money they make in a trust that they can’t touch till they graduate or leave for the NFL

That was my thought as well, but that wouldn't end any of the recruiting dirty business that is going on now. I'm not sure if they are linking the 2 at all, but if they are trying to stop that, then promising money upon graduation may not help.

I don’t think that will help the money For a recruit

But it could help with players making money of their likeness

As you said selling a shirt/jersey maybe autographs etc
