Big 10 Commish - 2011 Bama wouldn't make playoff

His opinion but it's telling on what type of format the Big 10 would only sign off on.
Delany: Non-division champs shouldn't make playoff
"I don't have a lot of regard for that team," Delany said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I certainly wouldn't have as much regard for that team as I would for someone who played nine conference games in a tough conference and played a couple out-of-conference games on the road against really good opponents. If a poll doesn't honor those teams and they're conference champions, I do."
"The polls don't always measure strength of schedule. Some conferences are playing nine games, some are playing eight. The Pac-12 is playing nine and then to go out and play a round-robin game against us, that's 10 and some of them are going to play Notre Dame - that's 11 difficult games. If they're ranked fifth in the country and they won a conference championship, I think that's quite an accomplishment. Some teams don't even win their own division. They started off highly in the rankings, lose early, don't play a championship game and they might end up at four."

I wonder what Delany was saying in 2006 when a lot of the Big 10 lackeys such as Kirk Herbstreit were openly campaigning for Michigan to play Ohio State in a rematch for the national championship. I bet he was singing a different tune back then.

Then LSU beats the hell out of anyone stupid enough to challenge them and the SEC still wins. It's getting annoying hearing Delany trying to act as if he's sticking it to the SEC. He should stick to bragging about how good their academics are.

Well he is the commish of a rich and powerful conference that has to sign off on this new playoff system.
What he thinks certainly can have ramifications.

Last year would have been a moot point because the Big 12 did not have a title game

So basically he's admitting he wants to neutralize the power of the SEC. At least he's being honest.

Yea what about 2006? Douche bag

you could say that - or rather, he probably believes that public perception has gotten out of hand toward one conference and popular voting doesn't work in situations like that - justified or unjustified...it's too much presumption year to year.
I believed when I heard this new playoff format that conferences (especially the Big 10) aren't going to sign off on it if they aren't assured some reasonable representation in the playoff...like conference champions...there's no way Big 10 is signing off on a playoff just based on popular polls that could produce 1. LSU, 2. Bama, 3. Arky.

In the system Delaney proposed then 2006 Michigan would have been out and I believe Louisville would have been in FYI. He has been consistent if nothing else.

well then that's just more incentive to actually win your biggest game of the year which was at HOME. Go in knowing that won't receive a mulligan.

I can't find a link, but a week or so ago, I thought he was advocating a 4 team playoff. The 4 teams would all be conference champs as long as they were ranked in the top 6. I thought that was a fair & logical compromise.
Alabama was the best team in the country last year. The only team close to them was LSU. This proposal would deny them a chance to even compete in a playoff.

Well CFB lived with that type of format for years and years...you had to win your conference - then were invited to one of the 4 big Bowls and had a chance to be ranked #1 at the end of the year.

I want the 4 best teams in the country. I don't give a frick if they are all in the Mountain West.

Damm, why didn't this happen last season?!?
LSU would be national champs.

First, I thought the whole point of the BCS & the forthcoming changes was to get away from that type of format and all of the controversy it created. Secondly, only the Rose required both teams to be conference champions. The Sugar might have invited Alabama to play LSU this past year under the old system.
I have no problem requiring a team to be a conference champion to play in the BCS title game under the current format, but I think having that requirement in an expanded playoff format has the potential to disqualify a deserving team.

I see no problem with a team being eliminated from contention as the best team in the country after they don't finish as their conference best team.

I really don't think its too much ask that there be some minimal requirements beyond the "eyeball test" popular poll in such a small playoff format - he's not even saying you have to win your conference...simply that in these divided conferences you should be able to pass the threshold test of your own division and contend for the conference title.

I do think this is what they will ultimately end up doing. regardless of what they choose there's going to be someone disappointed, there's just no way to please everyone. there will have to be concessions to get this done.
