Is it Gary Patterson? I'm not sure if this has been discussed on the board as I just joined but what he has done at TCU is incredible. He is the best coach in the nation IMO. He is a great motivator, his teams execute flawlessly, and his schemes are great.

TCU runs the spread offense that we should be running. They spread defenses out horizontally with their formations and dictate/diagnose coverages with their pre-snap motion but then, at the snap of the ball, they attack the field vertically! They are based upon the zone read (best play in college football IMO) but have added multiple wrinkles to it to turn it into a power running attack out of the spread.

Their defense is the perfect kind of defense to stop the spread. The 3-3-5 he runs is similar to Buddy Ryan's 4-6 bear but with extra safeties instead of extra OLBs. He's adapted a brilliant scheme from the past to today's style of play that is more wide open.

I really think (if I'm Notre Dame) that I go to Urban Meyer with a blank check and then to Patterson if I'm shot down. The guy is 11-3 in his last 14 games against teams from BCS conferences and that's with Texas', Oklahoma's, Texas A&M's, Nebraska's, LSU's, and Texas Tech's rejects for players. Seriously, the guy is competing with Houston and Baylor for recruits.

Someone from a big school is gonna give this guy a shot and he's gonna be the next Urban Meyer if not better. I've always been a big fan of coaches from smaller schools who had to outscheme and outexecute teams to beat them. IF Miles did leave (and this thread wasn't meant to voice any disdain for the job he's done here) then there's no one else I'd want over Patterson.

Well that's all I got for now. Is this the right board for this kind of stuff? It's not really about a coaching change and it somewhat involves LSU since it talks about one of the best coaches so I wasn't sure where it should be posted. Sorry in advance if it's on the wrong board! Geaux Tigers!

running a spread that attacks vertically takes a lot of balls and luck to run it well

also you need to face teams who don't have great speed rushers

thought TCU was a 4-2-5

It's always hard to tell how good these coaches are at mid-majors. Franchione did wonders at TCU, then failed miserably. Same going on with Dan Hawkins now at Colorado. Then you have Urban Meyer.

Some big school will come calling for him soon.

It's a shame Forth Worth doesn't support this TCU team.

Yea I don't know why I said 3-3-5 !

I have a very detailed article breaking down his defense on my home computer that I'll try to post later tonight. It goes very indepth on his schemes, the personnel he likes, the coverages he runs. It's very interesting and something I think many on this board would be very interested in reading.

I think behind the two Juggernauts of Meyer and Saban you have to look at Patterson, I've read that article you have and I like his attacking style defense, I'm not sold on Chavis yet, I know were better then last year, but the rant could have done better than last year on D...So, its kind of a preconcieved notion that we would've been better anyway with returning players as well...I dont like the way chavis sits back in coverage and doesnt blitz... Patterson disquises his blitzes much like saban and belachick...and he brings pressure on snd an 3rd downs almost half the time...I think whoever gets patterson will to a big time school will be lucky as hell, Ive been saying it since last year I think he is a great coach...

They are doing what is expected with great talent.
Patterson and Brian Kelly do great with lesser talent against lesser competition. Dont know how to rank them, but those are my top 4. Harbaugh is up there too. Any of those would have LSU playing better IMO.

I'd have to go with Urban. Only coach with two BCS titles, and he's been successful at both Utah and Bowling Green. If Bama wins this year, I'll go with Saban, who will be the first coach to turn around two programs and lead them to an NC within the first four season.

If Notre Dame is open @ the end of the season, most likely Patterson will wind up there with the talent they already have.

If Gary Patterson and TCU team played in the SEC or Pac Ten, they would have lost 2 to 3 games this year.
