Football back in the day was actually seen as a great way to toughen up rich kids, military or not. The first games being colleges playing each other wasn't some coincidence. It's similar to rugby in the UK where boarding school and other rich kids were encouraged to play it so they got tougher while the working class kids (whose lives themselves were brutal enough they needed nothing else to toughen them up) would play soccer.

Also completely anecdotal but the guys I know who ended up in the military mostly weren't jock types, and the ones who were ended up being officers that went in after college. There was no high school sports to military pipeline at all.
