And I made a factual correction about 1997.

Yep, agreed. My statement before was meant to be they (FL) loaded up for that one run and then gutted team. Not disagreeing with your factual statement.

the A’s made the ALCS in 2006 and got swept.

Tampa Bay has been in 2 World Series, Cleveland went to a World Series and lost in an extra inning game 7. Cleveland also has two other ALCS appearances in the last three years.

If you consider the Moneyball A’s to still be a thing, which they are still small market, then they’d have 11 postseason appearances since 2000, 7 division titles, two playoff series wins.

Dolan bought the Indians in 2001, and they slowly morphed into a true small market team, and I’d say in 2013 that probably marked this new era’s begin for them. In that time, they’ve had 9 postseason appearances, 7 division titles, 5 series wins, including an AL championship.

I think that’s considerably better.

St Louis Cardinals. I know they fell on hard times recently but from 2001 to 2014 or so they were the best at maximizing value for what they had.
