I never was the holder on field goals and extra points when I played organized football. I admit when we played in back yards and playgrounds I would pull my finger away at the last second since I was worried that my finger would get kicked and broken.

So those of you who have held on field goals do you just keep your finger there? How do you keep your finger from getting kicked and broken?

The trick is to let go a split second before contact is made...

I’ve never been a holder but one day during practice we had “kicker tryouts” and I kicked the shite out of the coach holding the ball

Any kicker worth a darn isn’t kicking anywhere near your finger. You kick it a couple inches up from the ground.

Have you ever played table top football where you flick a piece of Paper folded into a triangle? You don’t flick your finger.

I held in college and like someone else mentioned, kickers that get to that level will not miss the contact point by that much. And you definitely don’t want to let go early, you actually focus so much on what you have to do you don’t see the kicker until after contact. If I remember correctly our target time from first movement to contact was sub 1.25 seconds to make a blocked kick impossible.

Broke holder's finger in high school because he left his hand in front of the ball. I held in college and never got kicked
