I fell for this hook line and sinker, after all it was in SI, it was practically a sportsfans bible pre internet.

He had almost no belongings. A knapsack. A bowl he kept in the corner on the floor. A couple of wool shirts, always very clean, and maybe a pair or so of blue jeans. One pair of hiking boots. I always had the feeling that he was very bright. He had a French horn in an old case. I don't know much about French-horn music but he played beautifully. Sometimes he'd play it in the bath. He knew any number of languages. He was so adept at them that he'd be talking in English, which he spoke in this distinctive singsong way, quite Oriental, and he'd use a phrase like "pied-à-terre" and without knowing it he'd sail along in French for a while until he'd drop in a German word like "angst" and he'd shift to that language. For any kind of sustained conversation you had to hope he wasn't going to use a foreign buzz word—especially out of the Eastern languages he knew, like Sanskrit—because that was the end of it as far as I was concerned."

1000%.

I still wonder what my dad was thinking when I came running down the stairs and told him about him possibly not being allowed in the Olympics out of fear that he’d throw the javelin out of the stadium or into the stands.

He was probably like “is this kid fricking retarted?” lol

I subscribed to SI back then, and as a 7th grader I remember reading it and knowing it was full of shite. I religiously kept up with baseball and prospects even back then, and I knew there was no such a guy.

so what happened here?

How did they say this was a prank?

I feel like this would be pretty tough to do now days.

As soon as this things published, anyone would look this guy up and realize he didn't exist.

The Sidd Finch wiki is a great read by itself.

quote:

Two (unnamed) general managers called Commissioner of Baseball Peter Ueberroth to ask how their batters could face Finch safely. Meanwhile, the St. Petersburg Times sent a reporter to find Finch, and a radio talk show host claimed he saw Finch pitch.

The Mets gave Finch a locker between George Foster and Darryl Strawberry. The three major networks, CBS, NBC, and ABC, and the local St. Petersburg, Florida newspapers sent reporters to Al Lang Stadium for a press conference.

It could not be done today. Impossible. It was a great two weeks back then though. The world was entirely different. You really had to be of a certain age to understand I think.

Yea see this is why it confuses me but I guess in the 80s that's how it was (I wasn't alive)

But I'm thinking in today's mindset.

ESPN was new. Basically brand new.

You got in depth type of stuff from two places. Sporting news and Sports Illustrated. SI for writing that put you at the game. Even a week later. Sporting news more for stats.

ESPN was still airing tractor pulls and world's strongest man competitions. Or Australian style rugby.

The three networks (Fox didn't exist) owned sports and you got it on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6pm.
