I love me some AFL. I have been a big Geelong Cats fan since 2009.

There are at least 3 games (and sometimes 4 or 5) televised every weekend between FS1, FS2 and one of the ESPN channels.

What an incredibly fun sport it would be to play.

Apparently there's a rec league team in BR. I remember randomly meeting a guy at Fred's who asked me if I wanted to play.

You should have taken him up on his offer. I'm 57, so my playing days are behind me, but it really does look like it would be so much fun to play.

My favorite sport is football (primarily college), but Aussie Rules is just behind college basketball on my favorite sports list.

GWS takes the lead for the first time.
They've come out stronger after halftime.

I have a bet on Port Adelaide....therefore, GWS is a lock.

The most vicious hits in this game have been teammates running into each other.

Didn't realize they televised Aussie Rules regularly here.

I’ll have to check it out, havent been able to watch in a long time. My grandfather actually played for the Essendon Bombers for a bit in the 50’s, but Nana made him quit after he got is nose broken for the 5th time lol

I have watched this somewhat casually for years and years. I enjoy the hell out of it, but I don't know the finer points of it after all this time.

I don't know which club to support, either. Can we get a "primer thread" from someone who knows? I see there's a team that goes by Saints.

The St. Kilda Saints. Auburn's punter the last two seasons, Arryn Siposs, played for the Saints from 2011-2015.

used to love watching replays of those games on ESPN back in the mid 80's.....the refs were in sports coats....dude, the brutality.....it was awesome. I saw a game once in Melbourne....lots of fun....lots of beer.

St. Kilda was one of the teams involved in the infamous 2010 Grand Final which ended in a 68-68 tie with Collingwood. AFL now has extra time to settle a drawn Grand Final but back then, GF ties meant that a full game replay took place the following week. Collingwood easily won the replay.

ETA: the final 4 minutes of the original GF. LINK

Was in your shoes about a month ago. Literally put all the team names in a hat and randomly picked one.

I've been a lifelong Port Adelaide fan ever since.

I remember that well. I watched both games. To explain it to my friends that didn't follow the AFL, I said "Could you imagine a Super Bowl ending in a tie and then having to play a completely new game the next week?" Most of them would give me a WTF look...

Soccer used to have replays as well for cup matches.
Think the record for most replays is 5 or 6. Absolutely mental.

Port Adelaide is my team! Great to see them get the W against a legit opponent. A lot of our wins are against the lower tier teams so far.

Right before the season started up and I was excited to watch ANY sport, I researched every single team and looked up their history and after a few hours, I decided on Port Adelaide mainly because I liked their colors the best. They are also one of the oldest clubs in existence, which I liked as well. I think they started in the late 1860s. It’s crazy that Australian Football predates American Football. I would have never guessed that.
