But when this happens, it's a big deal to New Yorkers and the NY Times which is the biggest newspaper in the US -- so the story makes it everywhere. This was on their online front page like 2 days ago. NYC prides itself on being the safest big city in the US, it's one of the reasons it is able to draw talented people from all over the world to come there; so almost any time something like this happens it's a story. A very sad one in this case.

Missing or murdered girls on college campuses make the news. This girl went to Barnard College, which is right next to Columbia, and the stabbing happened in a nice park right next to Columbia. This would be news if she was white, black, Asian, Indian, etc.
