In todays world of advanced technology and such, wouldnt it be smart to have cameras that permenantly stay on the goal lines so that when needed to make the most important review decisions, you always have a straight line view of the endzone line.
It cant cost that much, can it?
Just a thought that always comes up to me when you dont get a clear review shot on the endzone

They need to install small cameras on the either side of the first down sticks (inward facing) and both sides of both goal lines for this exact reason.

The cameras are owned by the network broadcasting the game. It would be a pain for each week a new crew setting up their end zone cameras and taking them down.

Also more mobile cameras make more sense for them financially. Cost less money and they don't really give a damn if every call is correct.

Conspiracy to ensure that ESPN will have a say in the outcome of the game.

I question why you think it would be such a pain? Maybe you know more than me

NFL teams and most college teams would have no issue being able to afford two cameras to be installed permanently on each goal line that the networks could then just wire into

Not sure how the first down camera thing would work though

My idea would be perfect for this situation presented in UCF/Baylor

$250k+....most schools would balk at the cost.

Just install chips in the ball. Always know where it is.

The location of the ball is only one portion of the equation.
For starters, how will these "chips" know if the runner was down before the ball crossed the goal line? You can get an indication the ball broke the plane of the GL, but if the runner is already down, what good does it do?

Sounds great on a message board, but it's hardly a workable solution.

I've said that before as well. I don't see why it would be hard to put a chip in the ball that detects lasers going down the goal line and then the first down marker. It would instantly eliminate any ball placement issues, which would solve probably half of footballs miscalls anyway.
As far as the runners knew being down, well obviously the ball can't tell that. But I think it could provide valuable information such as when the ball tripped the laser and match that up to uh timeline of when his knew came down.

I don't know exactly, but I think there's absolutely something they can do.

I've thought that also, or it would be nice for the NFL to put some type of sensor on the ball to know if it crossed the goal line.

This one is even funnier.....
Laser is line of sight, so what good will it be when a player blocks the laser?

A false positive indication, by the football chip, will only cause more confusion and won't solve a problem. Besides whether the runner was down, how will it know if the runner had possession? The list is quite long so here's another. Under certain conditions of a play, the GL is extended...how will the chip know?

Look up the cost of professional grade hi def cameras with the capacity and features to handle the job....x 4. Besides the cost of the body/lens hardware, there's the cost of integrating them into the existing replay system. Then there's the added admin cost to maintain the add'l equipment.
