50 years ago this afternoon one of Wichita State's planes crashed and burned

This happened about 7-8 weeks before Marshall's plane crash. Sad,tragic story that shouldn't have happened. Wichita State had chartered two fairly small "air taxis" for the season and had already had issues with one. However this crash was more to pilot error.
Both planes refueled in Denver en route to Logan to face Utah State. The pilots of the "gold plane" thought the team,including the AD and Head Coach, would enjoy the magnificent scenery near by including the Continental Divide and many peaks of the Rockies. Unfortunately the plane was overweight and the pilots were unable to pull up in the midst of the canyons and crashed eventually killing 31 of the 40 on the flight.

They’ve been interviewing survivors on the radio here in Wichita all week. It’s been awesome to hear their stories.

It was pretty sad to hear the guy they had on yesterday afternoon. His voice sounded like it still weighs heavily on him all the time. I can’t imagine.

The wreckage is still in the mountains. You walk passed them heading up some trails right off I-70. It’s right by Loveland Pass.

Crash survivor Rick Stephens was a senior guard and stated in 2013, "...as we flew along over I-70, that there were old mines and old vehicles above us. I noticed we were quite a bit below the top of the mountains. I got up to go to the cockpit, which wasn't unusual to do, and I could tell we were in trouble, looking out the window and seeing nothing but green in front of us."

Wow...... I was like 10 years old and could not understand what about them playing football Saturday... then The Marshall crahhappened and I was really confused. But then I started paying attention to any plane crashes that started to happen.

I have never had anyone I was close to die "before their time" fortunately. I can't imagine 40 dying all at once, probably didn't know all of them but he knew a bunch.
