Why would you compare a game that came on a free channel against a game that came on Cable.

I could see if the National Championship was on ABC,Fox, NBC, or CBS, but it came on ESPN.

Okay.

The most watched College Football Game in recent history was Texas vs USC with roughly 35 million or so on ABC .

Probably not as the NFL has way more casual fans, but their product is far inferior.

Well, that's your opinion. I know people that laugh at the quality of play in CFB.

College playoffs are on cable because they are not popular enough to be on network tv compared to the NFL. CBS can get higher ratings with NCIS than a Alabama v. UGA playoffs.

Plus, I like the idea that the Alabama title game was much less popular than a NFL playoff game.

The same game played on Cable will always have way less viewers than on a network.

The SEC games on CBS will always outdraw the SEC games on Cable regardless of the matchup. CBS is available to millions more people than ESPN.

Good ratings for 1 game does not = increase ratings next year.

I'm now looking at another report and NFL playoff ratings were actually way down. The NFL had the worst TV ratings for the Divisional Round since 2009.

quote:

Saturday afternoon’s Falcons-Eagles game on NBC drew a 17.4 overnight rating, down 5 percent from last year and 12 percent from 2016. It was the lowest for the early Saturday time slot since 2009.

The Patriots-Titans matchup Saturday night on CBS was the lowest-rated game of the weekend, with a 16.6 overnight. That was down 9 percent from last year and 18 percent from 2016 and was also the worst performance in that window since 2009.

The Jaguars-Steelers contest in the early window Sunday on CBS pulled a 20.4 overnight, down 12 percent from 2016. (Last year’s game in that slot was moved to primetime due to weather.) That was the lowest mark in its window since 2002.

Finally, the Vikings-Saints duel Sunday afternoon on Fox drew the best overnight rating of the weekend (21.8) but was still down 23 percent from last year and 17 percent from 2016.

This is a silly thing to 'brag' about.

The NFL has always been a stronger national brand than college football. College football is far more regional. Very huge in the South and in Big Ten country, but the rest of America only moderate interest. NFL has a big fanbase everywhere.

NFL games are also primarily on networks while many of the biggest college games every week are on cable.

None of this erases the fact that the NFL has had the two worst years the past 2 seasons in terms of growth, as in, negative growth, for the first time ever, two years in a row.

Which is why I don't get why college title game isn't moved back to ABC. Ratings would be better than on ESPN.

and who's saying all year that people are sick of seeing the Cowboys on national television 13 times a year and other teams could bring in good ratings if they got the chance?

NFL on television has always been more popular than college football. This is nothing new. Even meaningless regular-season games hold their own and even do better than college football playoff games or the NC

Yeah, OK
quote:

NFL Divisional Round ratings hit across-the-board lows in the metered markets. Sunday’s Saints-Vikings NFC Divisional Round game earned a 21.8 overnight rating, down 23% from Packers-Cowboys last year (28.2), down 17% from Steelers-Broncos on CBS in 2016 (26.2), and the lowest since 2009.

Going back further, the 21.8 is the third-lowest for the late Sunday Divisional Round game since 2002 — ahead of the 2009 game and Panthers-Bears in 2007 (21.7). The 23% decline is the steepest of the postseason

Ratings down for divisional round

Bad news continues for NFL, as Divisional Playoffs ratings fall from previous years

NFL TV Ratings Tumble In Divisional Playoff Round

NFL Sunday night divisional game loses almost 3 million viewers from previous year

oh, and this:

ESPN's coverage of the Georgia-Alabama game averaged a 16.7 overnight rating among households, dominating everything else on TV Monday night and growing 9 percent from the comparable game last year.

Nothing to see here folks!!
