ot used to be that way for every position. I wish it still was. That provided crazy intrigue

I think yesterday's action showed that the "Lane 1 / Lane 2" arrangement works fine. There were so many people in Lane 1 that not too many people got to do another run from Lane 2.

Sato might have been the only one to benefit from Lane 2.

Wow, Legge in the Coyne car outqualified Ericsson's Andretti car.

Wow, Siegel has the opportunity to make Graham cry for the second year in a row.

Graham is in! By the skin of his teeth!

Sad end for Siegel.

The grid is set. I think they said McLaughlin had the fastest four-lap average of all time.

Row 1
1. Scott McLaughlin #3 (Penske / Chevrolet) 234.220 mph
2. Will Power (W) #12 (Penske / Chevrolet) 233.917
3. Josef Newgarden (W) #2 (Penske / Chevrolet) 233.808

Row 2
4. Alexander Rossi (W) #7 (McLaren / Chevrolet) 233.090
5. Kyle Larson (R) #17 (McLaren - Hendrick / Chevrolet) 232.846
6. Santino Ferrucci #14 (Foyt / Chevrolet) 232.692

Edit: Correction, "Fastest four-lap average for pole position."

quote:

Arie Luyendyk set the all-time four-lap qualifying average speed record of 236.986 in 1996, but his run came on the second day of qualifications and wasn’t eligible for the pole.

Hondas just don’t have the pace of the Chevys right now. I wonder why?

I think these things go in cycles

Honda dominated the 500s between 2012-2022

winning

2012
2014
2016
2017
2020
2021
2022

I think the pendulum is swinging back Chevys way

Anyone else going to the race this weekend? I'm going as a guest of a guy who has been to 70-something consecutive indy 500s. I'll admit my Indy knowledge is lacking compared to F1 and WEC. I've been to a few races, but I don't follow it all that much. I'm excited to be sitting next to a guy who is a super fan and can help fill in some blanks for me.

ill be there

if you are into wec and f1 there is no reason you shouldnt be an indycar fan

more elite driving talent than WEC, better racing than F1 (I would rate the top 5 Indycar guys on equal footing with the top f1 guys)

You are going to the largest single day sporting event on earth, and the only race where its winner is truly immortalized.

With a Lemans win, the car lives forever- you win Indy, you live forever

Bandwidth is my reason. There's only so much shite in my life I can keep up with I've always enjoyed my times at Indy races, but never spent the time delving too deep.

I posted this over in the NASCAR thread, but it’s worth sharing here, too. With rain a potential issue at Indy on Sunday, a possible rain delay could very well impact Kyle Larson’s ability to run the Indy 500. He has to start the Coca-Cola 600 in order to earn points for the race. The current National Weather Service forecast has a 60% chance of rain for the area on Sunday.

If Larson starts the Indy 500, but then abandons his car when a rain delay occurs, that's going to piss off a lot of people and sponsors.

If the chances of a rain delay during the Indy 500 are very high, then they should just start TK. That will be a popular move.

Maybe if you're leading the Cup points, you shouldn't be entertaining distractions from your real job?

If sunday is a washout in indy- he goes to charlotte and runs the 500 on monday

if theres a rain delay before lap 99 and hes in top 10; I think he stays and waits it out. Nascar will give him a waiver for the chase .

Only way he bails is if he’s out of the running.

He already has a cup championship.

A 500 win immortalizes him

I wouldn’t be shocked if he gets 1, he then tries to go for 4.

Could also see him moving to Indy full time after he locks up a daytona 500 and 2nd cup championship- Indy schedule gives him more time to run dirt and a new challenge.

Indy 500 winner, Cup Champion, Indycar series champion, Daytona 24 hr winner would be the greatest resume of any driver in the modern era

Scratch Kanaan as a possible fill-in for Larson if Larson cannot run the Indy 500 due to weather/schedule.

Here is the current (subject to change) National Weather Service forecast for Speedway, IN for Friday through Monday night. Severe weather is a possibility Sunday.

So Mon or Tue is most likely race day if weather forecasts hold up

I saw one meteorologist say that he would say the chances of racing Sunday at Indy are 25% or less. He is attending the race himself and said he is personally already making arrangements to be able to attend Monday.
