Oh, that must be glorious reading.

Glorious isn't the half of it ... oh that man lived a LIFE. I don't know how much of the book is BS, but again the man was literally dying when he wrote it, what reason did he have to lie?
He didn't crucify everyone. He loved the Allison brothers, for example. And Mauri Rose the old Indy driver.

The gang bangers were, to give you a taste, Fireball Roberts, Paul Goldsmith and Denis Hulme. That's the kind of names he named. Although he loved Fireball.

Bobby had a tough time getting along with a lot of people. His attitude was " I'm gonna give 100 per cent effort , and everyone else should, too".
I have no problem with that.

Wasn't Fireball one of Smokey's drivers?
Posted on 5/23/24 at 9:25 am to FightinTigersDammit
Yes. He also partied HARD especially early in his career.
Posted on 5/23/24 at 9:27 am to InkStainedWretch
Nobody partied harder than Curtis Turner

That's probably why he (and Donnie) got along so well with Smokey.
Bobby's problem was not accepting the reality that all of us, not just race drivers, face. If you agree to work for somebody, and there's a dispute over how that work is to be done, there can be discussion and give and take and back and forth, but you eventually reach the point where the guy who signs the paychecks gets to have it his way, and the guy who agreed to work for the guy who signs the paychecks has to either accept it and move forward, or leave.
Bobby left a few times, didn't he LOL?

Oh Curtis is prominent in that book ...
The guy Smokey hated more than anyone was Jim Rathmann, who won Indy in 1960. Smokey was on that crew and acted as the crew chief, but someone else got credit for that role. And as much as he loved NASCAR, Smokey wanted more than anything on this planet to have an Indy 500 win as a crew chief on his resume.
He was convinced Rathmann screwed him out of that.
In the book he said, "If he dies before I do, they better bury that motherfricker's arse in a scuba diving suit, because I'm going to be there every day pissing on his grave,"

Oh, Bobby was always willing to walk. But he was so knowledgeable about the cars, he should have been regarded as more of an asset than a pain in the arse.

Oh I agree. I think Bobby's biggest problem was he never really trusted anybody but himself in that area. He couldn't even get along with Waddell Wilson, who's pretty damn good himself and is about the most mild-mannered and easy-going sort you'd ever want to work with. Bobby still hates Waddell to this day, won't even speak his name.
Posted on 5/23/24 at 10:09 am to InkStainedWretch
Bobby said Waddell didn't want to hear anything that wasn't HIS idea, no matter how well it worked. Gave him credit for being a great engine builder, but said he had no business being a crew chief.

Tim Richmond ain't even in the same solar system ...
Posted on 5/23/24 at 10:20 am to FightinTigersDammit
Yeah I've heard the interviews, understand that's his perspective, have also heard Waddell discuss it.
I think an AWFUL lot of Bobby. He was a great driver and he did probably know more about building//preparing/maintaining race cars that most anyone. Plus he's suffered the torments of Job in his life.
But I still think very often he could be his own worst enemy. And that still lingers where he's concerned and is why ... very unfairly IMO given that they didn't do the same thing with Tiny Lund, who was universally beloved and didn't give anybody any problems ... just like Smokey will never get in the HoF, he will never get that win at Bowman Gray in 1971 that he so wants and would break the career tie between him and DW.
DW said he went to Bill France Jr. one time and asked him to give Bobby that win. He said Bill Jr. came out from behind his desk and got in his face and said, "Bobby will NEVER get that win."
There's something to be said about being politically incorrect and standing up for yourself. But it can carry consequences.

Chase Elliott is back in a Super Late Model for the ASA STARS Tar Hill 250 tonight at Hickory.
He is getting his first laps in as Thursday practice is underway.

Chase Elliott is all smiles any chance he gets to work with his childhood mentor and good friend Ricky Turner, the 2002 Snowball Derby winner.

Chalk this one under things we all saw coming. Stewart haas may be selling everything. Adam Stern reported earlier. He rarely misses.
He also reported nascar may mandate a max of 3 charters per team. 4 car teams would be grandfathered in.

Keelan Harvick's Hickory Legends Car feature trophy might be as tall as he is
