Newgarden was best once again in the first practice this afternoon. Qualifying is early tomorrow AM. Quite excited for it!

Iowa is a double-header short-oval event, with just one practice session on Friday, qualifying on Saturday morning, and races on Saturday and Sunday.
Iowa Speedway is only 0.875 miles around with a lap time around 18 seconds! The strategies on short ovals are really interesting. Over the course of a stint, speeds go way down because of extensive tire wear, so the guys up front look for the undercut to pass guys staying out several laps longer. The gamblers mid-field and further back may go for the overcut. The overcut works when a full-course yellow happens in the pit window. The guys who have already pitted will be a lap down. The overcutters pitting during the yellow will remain at the front of the field. I remember Takuma Sato pulling off the overcut at Gateway in 2019 to win when Bourdais crashed in the pit window. The leaders had already pitted under green and were a lap down, so when Sato, Kanaan, Carpenter, and Newgarden pitted under yellow, they became the legit leaders of the race. But the idiot announcers, including Paul Tracy who should have known better, took forever to recognize that this group had the advantage, when I knew it the moment Bourdais crashed. Here's the moment they figured it out:

Qualifying procedure on short-oval double-header weekends is really interesting to me. Each car goes out for two hot laps. The first lap goes to determine your starting position in the Saturday race, and the second lap goes to determine your starting position in the Sunday race. Typically the cars go faster on the first lap, and tire wear slows down the second lap. But sometimes drivers do the first lap too conservatively and have enough tire left to go faster on the second lap. These cars can end up unexpectedly at the front of the grid for the second race.
Saturday
Qualifying at 9:30 am ET on Peacock
Race 1 at 3:00 pm ET on NBC (green flag at 3:06 pm)
Sunday
Race 2 at 2:00 pm ET on NBC (green flag at 2:30 pm)

Foyt cars looked off thr pace in practice yesterday which is a bummer
Would love to see Helio get a W this weekend- been a rough season for Shank

Helio and Connor are going to be factors this weekend for sure. They looked strong yesterday.
The Foyt cars are just a disaster.

I wasn't expecting Penske domination, and I wasn't expecting the same guy to get pole for both races.
Power annihilated everyone and he went faster on his second lap!

Nice job Malukas and Carpenter.
I can see Ganassi happily swapping "Pay me!" Marcus Ericsson for "I bring a lot of family money" Malukas. He has a lot of potential.
Carpenter went 1.6 mph faster on his second lap to take P4. He must have really botched his first lap.
My best guess is that the first race will be a Newgarden--McLaughlin battle for the win. I'm gonna predict a McLaughlin win on Sunday.

Power from the pole today.
Herta notches one tomorrow.
There’s my guesses. Can’t wait to get started at the top of the hour

Unfortunately I have to watch the race about 30 minutes delayed, although I may catch up by the end of the race.

Lets hope for a palou dnf tomorrow to get things really interesting.
Newgarden almost has 30 wins- I was at his first at Barber in 2015 which seems like yesterday.
If he keeps this up for another 15 years, he will be the unquestioned modern era GOAT
